Bonjour! Are you ready to discover some funny and quirky expressions from the beautiful French language? Learning a new language can be exciting, especially when you stumble upon expressions that make you scratch your head in confusion and laugh. Here are some of my favourites 😊

  1. Avoir le cafard" (To have the cockroach): Now, don`t worry, this expression doesn`t mean you have a pet cockroach! It`s just a funny way of saying that you`re feeling down or sad. On the other hand, if you`re feeling a bit more chipper you could say "j’ai la pêche!" (I have the peach). This means that you feel great! Now you know 2 expressions you can use to describe when you`re sad or happy.
  2. "Tomber dans les pommes" (To fall into the apples): Have you ever seen someone faint? Well, the French have a whimsical expression for it. When someone faints, they say that person has fallen into the apples!
  3. "Avoir un chat dans la gorge" (To have a cat in the throat): Do you know that scratchy feeling you get when your throat is a bit sore? In French, they describe it as having a cat in your throat.
  4. "Appeler un chat un chat" (To call a cat a cat): Cats seem to be quite popular in French expressions. This one means to say things as they are.
  5. "C`est du gâteau" (It`s cake): Now, this expression isn`t about having a slice of cake, although that would be nice too. In French, when something is very easy to do, they say, "C`est du gâteau!" So the next time you breeze through a sudoku problem or finish a puzzle quickly, tell yourself, "C`est du gâteau!"

Let me know which French expression is your favourite!
