Ionic Bonding
Everything you need to know
Date : 03/03/2022
Basics
- Ionic bonding is the transfer of electrons between metals and non-metals
- Metals GIVE electrons
- Non-metals ACCEPT electrons
- Metals lose electrons to obtain a full outer shell (Noble Gas Electronic Configuration)
- Non-metals gain electrons to obtain a full outer shell (Noble Gas Electronic Configuration)
The electrostatic force of attraction between two or more oppositely charged ions
Properties
- High melting point (overcome strong forces of attraction between lattice ions)
- Conducts electricity when molten (melted) or aqueous (dissolved in water)
- Solid at room temperature
- Brittle (Like charges make contact which causes large repulsion when the compound is hit)
