Basics

  • Ionic bonding is the transfer of electrons between metals and non-metals
  • Metals GIVE electrons
  • Non-metals ACCEPT electrons
  • Metals lose electrons to obtain a full outer shell (Noble Gas Electronic Configuration)
  • Non-metals gain electrons to obtain a full outer shell (Noble Gas Electronic Configuration)
Definition
The electrostatic force of attraction between two or more oppositely charged ions
Properties
  • High melting point (overcome strong forces of attraction between lattice ions)
  • Conducts electricity when molten (melted) or aqueous (dissolved in water)
  • Solid at room temperature
  • Brittle (Like charges make contact which causes large repulsion when the compound is hit)
