Most of us have been taught in big groups at school, but not everyone has previously been taught one-to-one by a private tutor. Here s how to really benefit from your private tuition in French or German

No. 1: Tell your tutor what you want

Are you looking to improve school or exam grades? Before speaking to me, get out your latest school report or assessment feedback and see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. I can help you to improve on those and discover new ones.

Are you an adult language learner? Be ready to tell me why you re learning a language and where or how you expect to use it. I ll be teaching you very differently depending on whether you want to read business emails or order food in a restaurant on your holiday.

No. 2: Create time to commit to language learning

Weekly lessons are best you don t have so long to forget what you ve learned! For language learning, repetition is key. Lessons of an hour work great for those aged 12 and over. Consider shorter lessons of 45 mins for younger children. If you re looking for intensive revision or language learning, it works better to have 2 lessons of an hour in a day, rather than one long lesson.

No. 3: Figure out your timescale

If the exam is in 4 weeks, don t panic! I can still offer intensive revision with a side helping of exam technique and confidence building. If you have a little longer, the benefits will be that much greater.

The best approach is regular language lessons, even in the school holidays, over an extended period of months. School and university students will benefit from my ability to support and extend the school languages curriculum, whilst adults will find their confidence and ability grows from month to month.

No. 4: Learn your vocabulary

It sounds obvious, but if you don t know the words, you can t say anything! There are lots of ways of learning vocabulary, both on and offline, and I d recommend a little and often approach. Aim for 10 mins vocabulary learning a day, with maybe a longer session once a week. If you find it hard, ask your tutor for help.

No. 5: Spend time using French or German in the real world

It s really important to keep language learning connected to its use in the real world. Whether that s online gaming with native speakers or watching films, travelling to the country itself or hosting visitors from that country, any opportunity to use what you ve learned will boost your confidence and inspire you to learn more.
