Introduction to Jose Romussi who is a Chilean artist that stitches lines of colourful thread into his pictures. This artist is interested in stitching the past and present in his work. The lesson focuses on introducing students into how artists are inspired by surface decoration and will be an interactive discussion lesson which gets student to be more reflective when analysing the work of others.

Key questions to ask students:

(Formal elements - line, shape, form, texture, pattern and colour)

q What message do you believe the artist is trying to convey with this image?

q Who is the intended audience of this image?

q How does this image make you feel?

What are they going to learn?

- How to critically analyse the work of others

Do Now.
Students to look at the image of Jose Romussi s work for 10 seconds, I will then ask them to describe what they saw. I will then get them to look at the artist s work in more depth before describing the work again.

Starter

Student s will be asked about their initial thoughts of three different photographs with surface texture from Jose Romussi. They will then use adjectives to describe the artists work.

Task

I will present students with a selection of Jose Romussi s work they are to critically analyse his work in pairs using the question tabs I provide for them. I will check students understanding with key questions and prompts for the least able.

Checking Understanding

Students are to use keywords to describe what expression the artist tries to portray in a selected piece of work. They are to describe how the artist applies lines and shapes in his work.

Plenary - Students will be asked to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of Jose Romussi s work. There will be a deeper thinking question for students to answer.
