Photovoltaic cells are of paramount importance to the energy sector and the world as a whole, the amount of research done on improving their efficiency throughout history is overwhelming as they are a means to reduce our carbon footprint, by decreasing the amount of carbon dioxide produced. Over the past few centuries the materials used, construction and efficiency have dramatically improved though extensive research and funding in this field. They are now used from calculators to satellites and can range in performance and cost. The aim of this brief group research topic is to list the fundamental characteristics of the different cells, and their influence to society as well as obtaining an insight into the production by producing a simple yet functional dye sensitised cell.

The results conclude that a functional dye sensitised photovoltaic cell that operates briefly to the efficiency of 74.4% can be constructed using beetroot as the organic dye and this can be achieved with an artificial light source.
