Daily Reading

The importance of daily reading is as important today as it has ever been. With higher expectations coming from the new National Curriculum 2014, the skill of reading which naturally feeds into writing has become detrimental in a child`s basic education.

Research from 1987, is still as relevant today as it was when it was written by Nagy and Herman almost thirty years ago. They found that a child who read daily at twenty minutes will learn 1,800,000 in a year, compared to only just 8,000 words by a child who reads 1 minute a day. The latter child will also only total 180 minutes per school year, again compared to the first child who will total an astonishing 3,600 minutes.

The above research highlights the essential need for pupils to not only read daily but also to read for a minimum of twenty minutes daily. This daily read will give pupils a great opportunity to develop their knowledge not only of word choices but also a knowledge of the English language all it`s complexities, from grammar to punctuation.
