OK you need a certificate to get to uni, but I find that Biology A level does train you to think.

For instance, how often do we hear claims about evidence that proves a `fact`, even casually? `I take that supplement for my colds - I`m sure it helps` - Really? In this A level you learn to critically assess data and charts as evidence of a real correlation and/or causal relationship. What does the chart show and what does it not show? How significant is the correlation? What other factors might be affecting the results? This is good mental discipline.

It also trains you in answering questions. We all know that politicians are good at avoiding this! But the ability to work out what a question is really about, and what answer fits, is again a skill for the whole of life. `Will you arrive in time if you stop for coffee?` `Oh we`ll just drive a bit faster - the coffee will help!` `Do you know when John will arrive? He said he`d get a train and taxi` `Oh trains take 45 minutes.` `Thanks.` Thirdly (and there are many other points), biology is a subject with many difficult concepts to understand. The exercise of mastering this sets you up for the mental strength to grasp the countless concepts in our complex society, from utility bills to medical procedures, vehicle maintenance to child-rearing.

So you should end up with much more than a qualification. You will be better equipped for life. Studying for exams isn`t just a waste of time.
