** Bengali is usually ranked about sixth in the world in terms of number of people who speak it as a first language, with approximately 200 million native speakers in Bangladesh and several states in India. Bengali typically has borrowed freely from the cultures and languages it is near, resulting in slight differences in vocabulary depending where you are. . . .

** Bengali is often known as the second most beautiful language in the world after French. ** What`s interesting about the Bengali alphabet is that all the consonants have a vowel sound built-in. Diacritical marks are used when writing to change the default vowel sound (For example: Bengali Language Information). This can be utterly confounding to Westerners, because a word can be repeated several times with different marks and thus is pronounced differently each time, with a different meaning.

. . . ** Happily (for an English-speaker) Bengali does not have gendered nouns, but there is a lot of subtle inflection in spoken Bengali which can take some time to master. Verbs are especially difficult because they are heavily inflected, and the wrong inflection changes their case and your overall meaning. . . .

** In the world of literature contribution of Bengali is no less than English or any other language. Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for Gitanjali, which was written in Bengali. . . . ** There are Bengali radio stations in different countries- India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Japan, Germany, USA, Thailand, Philippines, Iran, etc. . . . ** International Mother Language day is based on Bengali language.
