The learning of a foreign language can serve a variety of purposes; it broadens the mind and gives one access to different cultures and, in the case of Spanish, can serve the very practical purpose of enabling us to communicate while on holiday, Spanish can be the gateway to Spanish and Latin American cultures. Being the third most spoken language in the world it can open the door to a greater appreciation of the world that we live in. It can be taken up for academic reasons or simply self-development. It can be studied in a variety of ways to suit the mind and background of the learner and accordingly can be an enjoyable and satisfying experience. It can also add to our experience as members of the European community and diminish the insularity that is sometimes attributed to us. Why not take up Spanish as a foreign language?
