I have just started learning the clarinet myself and would gladly take on any new beginners. You will see I play several other instruments and have a very broad but deep knowledge of music generally.

My B.Mus degree specialised in composition where I learnt to write in various period styles such as the classical string quartet and 16th century vocal polyphony. I thus have an all-round knowledge of historical styles where I have subsequently studied contemporary styles and applied them to my own compositions. The so-called New Tonality is where I operate and my own commissioned and performed opera Cinderella exemplifies both classical and contemporary styles including such techniques as fugue and bitonality. I am extremely enthusiastic in helping students working with traditional styles or exploring other areas.

Orchestral music and chamber music (wind quintets, brass quintets, serenades and mixed wind and string ensembles etc) have been my primary repertoire for this instrument. I have also enjoyed improvising harmonic lines in church music ensembles.

History of music was a major part of my music degree and apart from what I had to learn for that I have read avidly on the subject ever since. It informs my practical playing and gives me inspiration for composition. I study all areas from the earliest monophonic forms of antiquity to the most modern academic atonal as well as all the more popular stuff in between! I have a massive collection of music scores,books (mostly second-hand) and recordings in all media.

I have a practical knowledge of the piano repertoire extending from the renaissance virginal works to contemporary classical. I practise daily and study technical books on the subject of piano playing. Apart from my own solo playing I accompany exams and have accompanied rehearsals and played in chamber music combinations.

Having learnt the recorder at primary school I continued playing seriously after learning the treble recorder later on. I am very familiar with the duet repertoire and more lately music for recorder consorts. I take the recorder seriously and have studied styles of playing appropriate to the instrument`s historical repertoire.

I have many years experience in singing light opera, taking on mainly comic baritone roles which has also required skills in acting and theatrecraft. My heart is really in more serious music and I would love to help anyone singing opera (where I have performed arias in concert), music theatre, lieder or anything from classical to Broadway except amplified music.

I learnt the trumpet before I eventually learnt the French Horn. However I have played it more recently again and would gladly take on beginners.
