Information about Rupert

"Rupert realises that learning is understanding and doing, not being talked at, and he has integrated this realization into a highly-effective teaching style centred on the learner. He`s dependable, personable, and genuine. Any student lucky enough to work with him will thrive." Ex-professor and mother of an A-level student

A qualified teacher with 14 years` tutoring experience and outstanding references. I offer professional, patient, and inspiring teaching which encourages an appetite for learning, deep subject understanding, and the development of independent study skills, all with a flexible approach attentive to the needs of each individual.

I started to teach in 2006 and have since developed a successful practice offering tuition and academic mentoring of the very highest standards to clients in Oxford, London, Paris, Barcelona and further afield, working predominantly through word of mouth recommendations. I am proud of the consistently outstanding feedback I receive and am always delighted to provide detailed references from former clients on request matched to you own student`s age and subjects.

I teach students from 6 years old to 18+, and have a comprehensive understanding of the national curriculum and exam boards from KS2 to A-Level, and school entrance at 8+, 11+ and 13+ for my subjects. I have developed a specialism in supporting students with specific learning needs and those outside of mainstream education.

My approach to teaching is kind, patient and professional, with the aim of building my students` confidence and equipping them with the skills to become effective and inquisitive independent learners. My teacher training and years of experience building upon this have given me a detailed research and results-based understanding of `how learning happens` and as a result I offer thoughtfully structured sessions which are highly effective at generating understanding and efficient in their use of time.

All this is achieved while working in a relaxed and positive atmosphere, with a detailed and personalised programme of study supporting individual lessons that are creative, inspiring, and above all attentive and responsive to my individual students` needs.

I build strong professional relationships with clients, working closely with them to provide a personal service based on clear and effective communication, flexibility and the use of regular feedback and assessment. I count many former clients as personal friends, and often return again and again to work with siblings and other family members and friends.

Since completing my PGCE, my interest in education has broadened into related areas. I am founder and coordinator of a music charity in Oxford, as well as working with several other not-for-profit educational projects and charities.

In my free time I enjoy playing and coaching field hockey, travel and adventure, playing guitar and piano, and learning new languages, currently French and Russian. I love exploring the outdoors, and once cycled from Oxford to Athens with only one puncture!

Why do I charge more than some other tutors?

Experience has shown me that the tuition I offer is extremely competitively priced for the service provided. My service is comprehensive, and includes support outside of tutorials where students would like to email me with questions, detailed feedback and communication with parents, and the planning of a well thought out programme of study to meet student´s needs.

Clients often comment that a single session with me has helped their son/daughter more than 2 or even 3 sessions spent on similarly priced tuition elsewhere, which makes me very confident in the value it provides. I am normally able to provide prospective clients with detailed references from former clients of a similar age group and subject as a matter of course, and where it is not possible to provide one immediately I will endeavour to do so as soon as possible.

Availability: Unfortunately I am now fully booked and unable to take on new students for regular tuition until May 2018.

However, I do operate a waiting list in case of cancellations and can still consider requests for one-off tuition or more intensive tuition over short periods, including the upcoming Easter holidays.

In addition I offer online tuition, the flexibility of which would allow me to take on one or two more regular students.

For more information about my current and future availability, including over Easter and Summer onwards, please do contact me and I will endeavour to get back to you as soon as I can.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I am a qualified maths teacher (PGCE Mathematics, Oxford University) completing placements at both The Oxford Academy and John Mason School, Abingdon.

I have tutored privately since 2006 with a wide range of clients, both UK based and international, across both the UK and international curriculums (predominantly the IB, French and American systems).

Over the last 6 years I have worked with a leading tutorial college and school in Oxford, and as a top tier tutor for some of the most highly regarded educational consultancies in Europe.

Rupert was a fantastic help for my daughter, who wanted a few hours of pre-GCSE tutoring. We won`t know the outcome for a few months, but she definitely feels more confident and the attack of nerves has been dispelled! His approach is thoughtful and professional and he has a genuine desire to help. I would thoroughly recommend him.

Rupert is a natural - a clear communicator with a very kind manner. Both my kids 12 and 16 really liked him and learnt from him well. They were even keen on more lessons!
