Information about Marie-claire
I offer 1-2-1 lessons on the Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone and Keyboard from my home in Drylaw. I teach the Flute, Saxophone and Electronic Keyboard up to Grade 8 and up to Grade 5 for Clarinet and Recorder. Most pupils have a half hour lesson every week during the school terms, although other arrangements can be made to suit your requirements. Here`s a bit more information about me.
As will as having a Music Degree I have also completed the Certificate of Teaching course run by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (CT ABRSM) which has really improved my teaching and helped me to become a reflective practitioner. This means that I am constantly analysing the lessons I give and always striving for ways to improve my teaching. As well as teaching pieces, I like to use a holistic approach and integrate elements such as listening, theory, sight-reading and improvisation into lessons. I am happy to prepare and enter pupils for examinations with either ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall, but these are not compulsory and even those pupils who do sit exams do not do every Grade. As well as exams, motivation is also provided by the opportunity to play in regular concerts which are held at least once per term. I gained a BA Hons in Music (2.1) from the University of Liverpool in 2001 and am a Fellow of the Victoria College of Music.
Approximately one third of my pupils are adults and so I am becoming experienced in dealing with the unique challenges that face adult learners. I hold informal get-togethers every so often so that the adults can share their experiences and have the opportunity to perform something in front of a small sympathetic audience.
Pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties
As part of the CT ABRSM course I decided to study the area of teaching pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties. I enjoy the challenge of working with pupils with additional needs including those with Dyslexia, ADHD, Asperger`s and Dyspraxia. I wouldn`t say that I was an expert, but I am gaining more knowledge of these conditions and am able to adapt my teaching to suit each pupil. The parents of my existing pupils with these difficulties especially appreciate my patience and understanding in teaching their children.
