Information about James

I`m a 29-year-old from Leeds, and a graduate of Cambridge University with a First at BA level in Physics and a Merit (first/ 2.1 borderline) on the Masters course in Mathematics.

Have also completed a PhD in Physics at Edinburgh, with final graduation shortly.

I`ve spent most of my life enjoying maths and physics with a passion and hope to share this as much as possible.

Availability: Weekends and most evenings.

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: Have plenty of teaching experience at Edinburgh University, working mainly with first-year undergraduates there on the Maths for Physics courses. In 2016 I also led that course in the absence of the main lecturer, preparing several lectures as well as extra teaching materials.

Have also spent three weeks working as a classroom assistant at my former High School, Abbey Grange Academy, working with children at all ages and levels of ability. Spent a further three weeks there in September 2018.

I have done a small amount of unpaid, informal tutoring sessions with students during my time at school. Worked for one session with a student whose grade went from a predicted B to an A at GCSE maths. Additionally have prepared several online introductions to topics in mathematics, and provided fully explained answers to questions online.

In 2012 I won the King`s College John Rose Prize for "Best explanation of a Scientific Principle of General Interest" - evidence for my ability to provide clear explanations.
