Information about Jake
Hello! My name is Jake and I am looking to tutor Maths and/or Chemistry to A-Level students (Year 12/13). I offer the first session for free and use this as a meet-and-greet. I can talk to both the student and parents to find out the best tutoring approach, what you want from your tutoring, which syllabus the school use etc.
~ My Background ~
I attended a state school for my GCSEs and achieved 8A* and 2As. I decided to stay on at the Sixth Form and studied Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths at A2-Level. After getting the grades A*A*A*A, I was offered a place at Oxford University to study a Masters in Chemistry. In 2017 I graduated with a First and am currently pursuing a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at Oxford University.
Last academic year I was a tutor at Lady Margaret Hall College, Oxford University. I taught the Mathematics course to first year Chemistry undergraduates. I am currently a supervisor in my research group, where I am responsible for the work of a couple Chemistry Masters student.
~ Tutoring Style ~
This is decided by the student! I can:
- Work through their syllabus alongside school lessons to ensure in-depth understanding.
- Focus on certain topics which the student finds difficult / wants to practice more.
- Work on exam technique and go through past paper questions.
I am passionate about Science and Maths and would love to share my enthusiasm with students through tutoring. If any of my students were interested in pursuing Science or Maths at University I can help with their application too.
Availability: Monday evenings are my preferred time. Please don`t hesitate to get in touch to organise a free meet-and-greet lesson.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: I tutored Maths for a couple of years whilst at school: I helped struggling students in Year 10 in their Maths classes, and privately tutored a couple of GCSE students after school.
For 2 years, whist at university, I worked as a volunteer for a student-run organisation providing disadvantaged children aged 8-16yrs in Oxford with extracurricular activities.
As mentioned above, I was a Maths tutor at Oxford University and am currently a supervisor for Chemistry Masters Students in my research group.
