Information about Caitlin

*** Available online only due to the current COVID-19 situation. I have a lot of experience tutoring online, and own a writing tablet connected to my computer to allow clear teaching despite not being face-to-face.***

My experiences to date have enabled me to discover that I really enjoy helping people to learn, and I find sharing in their development and seeing their growing confidence greatly rewarding. I thoroughly enjoy putting a lot of energy into making sure that maths is engaging. I have a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for maths. I love the richness and power of the subject and the stories behind it: I believe that sharing this passion will bring maths to life for others.

I`ve found that encouraging an interest in Maths outside the strictly academic side of the subject helps greatly with a students confidence and attraction to the subject, which has a knock-on affect on their grades. I, therefore, try to add a bit extra to my tutoring sessions: telling the student a bit of background information about the mathematicians and formula they are learning about, as well as specifically pointing out life skills they are learning from each topic and what jobs it could lead into.

Tutoring is becoming more widely used globally, and I am here to help any and all students. This can be in the form of:
> short term bookings due to an operation causing significant absence from school
> regular day-time sessions for students unable to go to school for reasons such as anxiety
> support for those students who need the extra help to get the passing grades in maths (offered to all ages, it is recommended if your child struggles with maths you do not leave getting help to just prior to GCSE exams!)
> challenge and extra support for those students who are gifted and talented, and are aiming for the higher grades
> adult sessions for those who are retaking GCSE qualifications to aid a job transition, or to prepare for tests such as the National Skills Tests needed in maths to get onto a teaching course.

Teachers do an amazing job of working with your children in school. But they are limited in how much they can help by the class sizes, behaviour problems in general schools, and admin rules/time. I aim to have my tutoring flow with the work your children do in school, to enhance their classroom learning rather than replace it. Tutoring allows for a much more personal approach that can make a huge difference to all students - from those at the bottom all the way to your top performers.

Availability: Available every day apart from Sunday, excluding Monday morning.

Experience: I have a degree in Mathematics and Statistics, and a PGCE qualification, from Newcastle University, as well as three years teaching experience as a qualified Maths teacher (in Good (Ofsted rated) schools). I have a keen interest in tutoring Maths in a way that makes it interesting and accessible for all. I have a range of experience teaching children; from private and voluntary tutoring to being an Au-Pair in Asia.

During my final year of university, I tutored a range of students from 10 years to 18 years old. I worked for a voluntary organisation (Success for All) that tutors children from low-income families. I also had a number of private students. In both roles, I taught Maths and English.

I worked as an Au-pair in Asia for fifteen months. I lived in with a Chinese family, and as part of that, I tutored their nine-year-old daughter full time in English (as a second language), Maths, and Science. Since this, I have kept up tutoring their daughter in Maths and Science online; I have also picked up a few of her classmates as regular online tutees.

My experience as a qualified teacher means I have a deep understanding of where students encounter problems, know methods proved to help, can deliver highly differentiated material even if the sessions are not one-to-one, and have a deep knowledge of the current maths curriculum and how to delve deeper into this to provide relevant challenge and support.
