I am an experienced Private Tutor who teaches in the Southampton, Eastleigh, Botley, Romsey, Fareham, Lyndhurst and Bournemouth areas. I have degrees in English Literature and History. I specialise in all the humanities subjects: English Literature, English Language, History, Creative Writing, and Theology. I have taught material for all the major exams boards for English (AQA, Edexcel/Pearson, WJEC/Eduqas), and History (OCR, Edexcel and AQA). I also teach English as a second language to foreign students.
I have a passion for teaching, love interacting with students and seeing them develop their skills, expand their knowledge and realise their potential. I try to immediately establish a strong rapport with my students and my sessions are very engaging and interactive. For GCSE and A Level the normal session length is 1.5 hours, this gives us the necessary amount of time to cover all the material in preparation for the exams.
As part of my GCSE English sessions we have weekly vocabulary lists to incorporate into our repertoire, in addition to selecting a (non-curriculum) fiction book to read for pleasure. I believe it is paramount to have a variety of texts read in preparation for the creative writing exam and I strongly encourage reading an array of genres.
From my experience, students learn and retain information much better if it is delivered in an engaging and imaginative way. The English Language module I teach is based around the two English Language GCSE exam papers - we look first at Paper 1: creative/descri ptive writing (students find this usually quite a fun module as we look at descri ptive writing using props, describing strange foods/textures etc.), we then move on to the reading component of Paper 1 - which students typically struggle with at school, however, after a few sessions of explaining what to look for in language and structural analysis, they often become quite apt at the analysis part of the paper. We then move on to Paper 2: Authors` perspectives and viewpoints/transactional writing. This too is broken down into the Writing and Reading components, where we learn how to write in a variety of formats and for a variety of purposes.
For GCSE English Literature it entirely depends on the texts your school is studying, however we always look to explore the context the book was written in and how the themes of the book can be linked to its context. This can often allow students to understand the text in an entirely new dimension and make studying a nineteenth-century novel a lot more interesting.
For History it also depends which modules your school is studying (they vary significantly with each school/exam board), however my approach is to engage my students in the subject and aim to bring history to life! We look at a variety of source material and learn the important skills of source analysis. I try to run my sessions in the style of a seminar - we will have a discussion topic and look to explore how far we agree with that view based on the evidence whilst learning how to utilise second-order historical concepts in our writing. I don`t believe students learn from staring at a text book, so most of my sessions are very interactive. Last year I was lucky enough to tutor students from the same school/class and was able to run joint seminar sessions where we debated historical events, with great success.
*********for GCSE and A Level sessions the typical session length is one and a half hours (as there are lots of modules to cover) **********
I always look to tailor a plan specifically for each of my students` learning needs and monitor and track their progress. I set weekly assignments which I always mark and provide feedback.
Availability: Please have a look at my calendar, which I try to keep updated.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: I cover material from Key Stage 1 all the way up to A Level and Degree material. I have been teaching for 5 years and have taught material from all the major exam boards (AQA, Edexcel/Pearson, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas). I have taught many students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD, ADHD, slow processing issues and various learning challenges and have found a way to always engage them in the sessions and keep them interested in the subject. I have taught students from Year 1 all the way up to Adult Learners.
We have a total of
review(s) for Matt.
Matt Thompson has been a fantastic English language /Literature Tutor he is so knowledgable and teaches with a passion. He never let us down and always arrived early.
He is very smart he has a lovely sense of humour and my son and him had a brilliant rapport.
During the exam time Matt had been in contact before and after every exam he emailed revision notes and reminders to keep my son focused.
We were so lucky a space became available as my son was in Year 11 when we engaged Matt in the November of 2018 which meant allot of hard work ahead.
My son was attaining grades of 3, his moral was rock bottom we felt the school had let him down, my son knew deep down he could make a massive improvement with extra support. So we engaged Matt he is amazing as he found how to bring the spark and competitiveness back by teaching in a way my son did not realise he was learning which built up his confidence as he wanted to work hard to try and attain a 5/6 to open up opportunities to study at College.
The grammar, punctuation ,
paragraphs the more descri ptive words together with how the questions are expected to be answered to gain the most marks, all this has been taught by Matt and will have made a huge difference. My son is confident he answered the exam questions in the way he had been taught by Matt and realised that others in his Year who sat the same exams were not as knowledgeable as he was.?
Now we wait till August. I have no regrets in Engaging Matt. (And neither does my Cat Billie who never goes to anyone, went straight to Matt on the first day and has sat next to him every lesson to be tickled , so if my son has not done well Matt will be kidnapping Billie and taking him home )!! However we are very confident Billie is safe !
Thank you Matt for all you have done, you have been amazing. And anyone engaging Matt will have no regrets.
Matt has been tutoring my son GCSE English for over 6 months. My son really enjoys the tutoring sessions. Matt challenges him but also makes it good fun too! He has had a big impact on results - an increase of at least 2 grades. Matt is engaging and knows how to get the best out of my son. I am so glad that we got in touch with Matt - I recommend him to anyone.
We are so pleased to have found Matt. We needed some extra tuition for English for my sons upcoming GCSEs. Matt has very quickly got a good understanding of my son and his ability and has devised a plan to help him achieve his best. My son is more engaged in the subject and we are noticing an improvement in his work. We now have tuition every week. Matt always takes the time to explain to me what they have done each session and what to prepare for the next one. I would have no hesitation in recommending Matt.
Matt has only recently started working with our son preparing him for his entrance exam. We are absolutely thrilled to have found him. He is professional , punctual and extremely resourceful. Our son enjoys his sessions with Matt and we can see an improvement even in the short period Matt has worked with him. It is brilliant that after each session he is happy to let us know how our son is doing and give advice for further development. We would definitely recommend Matt , fantastic English tutor.
My son has recently started working with Matt (GCSE English). Matt makes the sessions relevant and interesting which has engaged my son in a subject he finds challenging. Matt is definitely helping my son move forward with his English skills.
We are just starting out, but Matt has struck up a very positive relationship with my son very quickly. He has an energising style of tutoring that brings the subject to life. Absolutely happy.
Matt is a lovely tutor. Relaxed, personable, easy to get on with, professional and very experienced. He made a good connection with our son, treating him as a young adult rather than a child/pupil. He makes the sessions very interactive and inspires participation. We are very pleased to be working with him.
We could not praise Matt more highly. He is incredible with our son. Within 4 weeks of tutoring he has turned our uninterested 15 year old into someone who is writing and enjoying it. Just incredible. We feel very fortunate to have found him. He is extremely knowledgeable and has very interesting ways of teaching that engage our son. Perfection.
This review is in two parts: the first section is written by my Dad; and the second part is written by me, a History A Level student at Barton Peveril College, in July 2018.
Dad: We hired Matt to tutor my daughter in History A level from September 2017 to May 2018. Matt is a likeable, relaxed, friendly and trustworthy chap. I felt comfortable about him spending time alone with my daughter. Matts attendance and punctuality was great, and he was flexible when we needed it, and is a good communicator - prompt to reply and good at keeping us in touch with progress.
I know that Matts tutoring gave my daughter more confidence in general and an enhanced understanding of the curriculum - my daughter told me so. In that context, I think Matts charges are very reasonable and value for money. I commend Matt to any parent who is thinking of hiring a private tutor - I think it was money well spent.
A level student: I liked Matts style. He treated me like a young adult. He did not teach History by the book. Instead we discussed and debated issues, and he challenged me to develop my ideology and opinions so that I could come to my own conclusions, rather than just learn dates, names and places by rote. I really like that approach - it led to a deeper understanding of the subject. Thankyou Matt!
We were in desperate need of a History Tutor for our Son to help him pass his History GCSE! Our Son had literally lost his passion to learn!
THANK GOODNESS FOR MATT! We can`t sing his praises enough. He is reliable, prompt, patient, enthusiastic and so passionate about what he is teaching. Matt develops a strong rapport with his students and has a genuine compassion for your child and their understanding of the subject. He keeps my son engaged during the lessons by making them fun, exciting and interesting. He also takes time at the end of a lesson to give parents a little update as to how the lesson has gone, and what they have been working on. We highly recommend Matt.
Matt is currently working with my son (year 11) on his English GCSE`s. Matt is very friendly and has been brilliant with my son. He is very supportive and was quickly able to identify my son`s weakness, he was happy to talk me through them. The tutoring sessions are very structured and varied and Matt is working through the curriculum covering all aspects. He has encouraged my son to read and is going through both English language and literature. He has helped to improve my son`s confidence in his own ability.
Matt is great! My son is definitely benefiting from his lessons. He now looks forward to and is really enjoying history. A real turnaround!
His profile was good as it helped me make a decision to contact. On meeting him he has a lovely manner & my son has instantly bonded with him. His manner of teaching had been embraced also with him tapping into the students interests. So glad I went on this site & would definitely recommend to others
Matt has been tutoring our son GCSE English Language for the last 3 weeks and I am hugely impressed at the difference this has made already. Matt is warm and friendly, innovative in his style and very engaging. We all think he is great and look forward to every visit. Thanks very much Matt. A real find.
Matt has been tutoring my son for a few weeks now and we are all very impressed. He works very hard in the session and sets clear expectations for between sessions. we are seeing the impact already.
he is good teacher for me.
Matt has been working with my son for the past few months. As a Teacher myself, I had high expectations about who was best suited to work with my son. Matt has certainly delivered to a very high standard and continues to present exciting sessions that enable my son to want to try and learn. Matt has shown he is able to deliver foundation phonic work and teach to the Reception/ Year 1 curriculum. He always gives us feedback and is keen about working in partnership with what is going on at school. Matt has excellent subject knowledge in both English and Maths and is able to use a range of strategies to ensure they understand. I would highly recommend Matt to any parents who want to ensure tutoring is a positive experience for their child.
Matt has been tutoring my 18 year old son for A Level English Literature. Matt came to our house and met my son for the initial assessment of his needs. Matt planned the sessions around my son. Matt was able to keep my son engaged in the sessions and encouraged him to speak about poems (Keats being my son`s favourite!!) and what they mean. The difference in my son`s confidence from the first session to the last was huge. My son went to his exams filled with confidence which he didn`t have before the sessions with Matt. Matt is easy to get on with and very reliable. I highly recommend Matt as a Tutor.
We have only just started using Matt to tutor our 14 year old son but our first impressions of him are very favourable. Matt was quick to respond to our initial query and we arranged a time for him to come to our house for the initial assessment of our son`s needs. Matt is easy to get on with and likeable, putting us and our son at ease straight away. He is very knowledgeable regarding the exam system and made some extremely valid points regarding our son`s GCSEs next year. At the first meeting Matt made us aware of the fact that the speaking part of our son`s English GCSE was likely to be in the following few weeks and started a study plan accordingly. We very much look forward to seeing how our son develops under Matt`s tutoring.
Matt has been tutoring my 3 children (14,9,7) for the past year. The lessons he delivers are tailor made for their ability and needs and demonstrates a sound understanding of the curriculum that they are following. My children remain actively engaged during their sessions with Matt and look forward to each session with him. His professional yet relaxed approach ensure that my children are willing to learn and always know what is expected of them and what steps they need to take next.
Matt ensures that feedback is given to me at the end of each session, and he has also provided information to take into school to ensure all education providers are on the same page.
Matt`s lessons are always eagerly awaited for and my children view him as friend as well as a teacher.
I cannot recommend Matt highly enough.
I have been very pleased with the way Matt has tutored my daughter. He is very passionate about the subject and has really helped her confidence. He is easy to talk too, honest and reliable.
I would highly recommend him.
Absolutley superb, he is amazing with my daughter and helped her so much. Would recommend 100%
Matt was very quick in replying and flexible for scheduling sessions for A level English Lit. He was a brilliant tutor who gave me a far greater understanding of texts than I learnt in my own lessons at college, and tips for my exams which proved invaluable. Matt always marked set essays very quicky and provided constructive feedback that helped me to improve them, and gave me more confidence when it came to my exams. Overall Matt was a great tutor, Thanks Matt:)
