Information about Harish
I am currently undertaking a DPhil at Oxford University in Social Anthropology and would like to help students of all levels with regards to their attainment in English. Additionally, I also teach anthropology to students interested in understanding more about their own or other cultures.
For KS3 students, I aim to prepare them to be more than adequate at their current level but ideally will aim to challenge them to tackle areas of the KS4 statutory curriculum. By doing so, not only will their attainment exceed their current level but will hopefully leave them prepared for GCSE and further.
English is a preeminent subject in the United Kingdom because it is the foundation to so many aspects of life, whether it is born out through one`s adequacy in conducting business effectively or communicating ideas to one another, English also develops the individual on a personal and emotional level.
As such, I am focused instead on teaching the principles of English rather than expecting `by rote` learning by students. I have devised a generalised framework for this purpose and then adapt it for each student. For those who do require the memorisation of quotes and passages, I have also developed a method for this too which is hopefully enjoyable enough that the knowledge acquired retained better.

For students interested in anthropology, what is learnt is dependent partially upon individual interests. Going through existing theory and relating this to the student`s nominated cultures of interest, I will on a weekly or near weekly basis discuss with them their ideas, offer further and related reading and critically analyse essays written on the topic by the student, addressing fundamental questions such as, `what is nature and culture`, addressing each of these in turn as a module before moving on.
Availability: I am available from 5 pm to 9 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 6 pm on weekends.
Please note that whilst I understand cancellations may be necessary from time to time, I do request the student in question provides at least 24 hours notice of the fact so that other provisions can be made.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have some experience in teaching the 11+ for a period of about 3 months and have had about a year teaching KS3 English to a few students. All the same, I would like to be upfront and honest in stating the extent of my previous teaching. Conversely, I hope you will find the enthusiasm I have to teach to be a reasonable alternative. To this end, I have already and will continue to familiarise myself with the current curriculum for English and Geography and also have a generalised framework ready by which to structure lessons, dependent upon the student`s strengths and interests.
As regards to teaching anthropology, I did mentor some undergraduate students for a time during my bachelors degree but as each student will naturally follow their own interests, a measure of standardisation is only possible insofar as the structure of teaching anthropology goes; the content will invariably differ from person to person.
