Information about Nikhil

I am a bright, able student with a passion for teaching Mathematics. I have just finished my first year at the University of Cambridge, reading Economics, and achieved a high First Class mark in my Part I exams, placing 6th (out of 158) in the entire year, including coming 1st in the year in the Pure Maths paper. I am a quantitatively-minded economist, taking great enjoyment in the Mathematical aspects of my course. My interest in Mathematics began to grow during A-levels, evidenced by my high A*s in both Maths and Further Maths A-level (582/600 and 564/600 respectively). However, I strongly believe that the way we are taught Mathematics in secondary schools lacks emphasis on intuition and application; students are often given a method and told to apply it to some textbook questions, without regard for why the method is successful in solving the problem. This leads to a very linear understanding of the subject, and students are frequently left puzzled when they need to apply the said method in an unfamiliar situation, and these questions tend to be the A* discriminators.

I aim to fill this gap in understanding, by providing students with a variety of methods and tools to tackle any question they could get in their examinations. I am patient, empathetic and most importantly have a fresh memory of what my students are going through as just 2 years ago I was in the same position as them. I can assure you that I have the academic knowledge as well as teaching techniques tailored to each individual`s strengths to help students exceed their target grades, but more importantly, develop a deep and broad understanding of the topic.

Availability: With minor exceptions, I am available throughout the summer, until the start of October 2019. Please contact via an enquiry to organise specific times.

Experience: From September 2017 to October 2018, I spent my gap year tutoring Maths and Economics. I taught a total of 12 students, ranging from Year 7 to Further Maths A-level, and have received excellent feedback from all my students. From (relatively recent) first-hand experience, I can say that taking out-of-school tuition can often be daunting for a student and can quickly become something they dread. I take pride in my ability to empathise with young students and strike a good balance between making lessons enjoyable and productive.
