Information about Paula

A Stroud-based, highly experienced, warm and friendly teacher, I love tutoring students - young or adult - one to one, and seeing the progress we can make together.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IN THESE CORONAVIRUS TIMES, I AM OFFERING SKYPED ONE-HOUR ENGLISH LESSONS FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLCHILDREN: UP TO TWO AT ONCE. THIS IS ALREADY WORKING SUCCESSFULLY WITH FOUR PUPILS.

I am more than happy to liaise with parents or carers on the style of tutoring that would best suit their child (they know them better than me!) please also be prepared for me to ask you, too, to help your child in certain ways with their areas of difficulty, and to give you advice on how to support them when I am not there. Equally, there may be `homework` from my sessions, which it is useful to complete if progress is to be made. I try to make this as fun and interesting to the student as possible, depending on their enthusiasms, hobbies and motivations.

I can teach specifically to certain syllabuses, Exam Boards etc., obviously.

If you are an adult learner, I will be patient and caring. I can help you with literacy in any areas that we discover together you may need. If English is your second language, I will again adapt my tutoring to your specific needs, e.g. pronunciation, vocabulary, English suited to your work or your hoped profession, business English, writing, reading and more.

Please note that owing to the shortcomings of Google as used on this site, I do not live near Cheltenham as implied, but am based in Stroud. If you wish me to visit your home, I travel up to 8 miles from Stroud, but obviously need to charge a little extra for my travel and time. To help you avoid this if you wish, I am used to tutoring students in my own home. You are welcome to accompany them and learn from the sessions yourself as a parent/carer, or if you prefer, to return to collect your child at the end of each session.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Availability: Weekdays.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: I am a highly experienced teacher - and have even coached teachers in how to teach! My specialism is English and literacy, for native speakers but also for those with English as a second language. I also help young students with maths and French (the latter up to GCSE).

I have plenty of experience tutoring 1:1: with primary school age children, with students trying for Common Entrance/the 11+, and for students working towards their GCSEs. I can also tutor two students at a time, if their needs are similar enough.

Paula is an excellent, experienced tutor, with an extensive knowledge of her subject. She tutored my son for language and literature leading up to his GCSEs, and was able to explain to him clearly how to approach exams, showing a very good understanding of what the exam boards would be expecting. Given that my son`s interests are definitely more science based, the fact that he now has two English GCSEs speaks for itself. We would definitely recommend Paula; she was well prepared, very thorough, and very encouraging.

Paula was a fantastic tutor to our daughter, playing a large part in restoring her love of learning after a difficult time at school. Our daughter thoroughly enjoyed Paula`s imaginative and encouraging approach, and really looked forward to her sessions. Thank you, Paula!

Tutors Response :

Oh Ellie, how very very kind of you to leave such lovely feedback. I`m still thinking of you all, and have been wondering how you have coped with the dreadful events in Salisbury a few months back! All fond wishes to you all.

Paula provided 11+ tuition for our son Sam during 2016/7. Paula established a great relationship with Sam from the beginning and was able to teach Sam new topics and reinforce his existing knowledge. Sam went into the 11+ exam with some confidence as a result of Paula`s tuition.
Whilst being able to tutor Sam with all knowledge he needed to pass the grammar test, Paula also made the sessions fun for Sam and often I would hear laughter, as well as discussion, during the tutoring hour!

Sam passed the 11+ and was allocated the Grammar school he wanted, in part due to the tutoring Sam had with Paula.

Thank you Paula, we really appreciate your efforts.

Tutors Response :

Oh Lindsay, how very kind of you! A lot was down to Sam`s dedication, too. Well done, Sam!

I am so very pleased we found Paula through Tutor Hunt.

My son was struggling with English and didn`t do too well in a mock exam at the end of year 10. I was apprehensive when I started to look to find a tutor as my son didn`t particularly enjoy english and would get frustrated and disheartened. I would describe him as a reluctant learner who doesn`t enjoy reading and parental help with homework never welcomed, hence my search for a third party to help.

I was hoping to find someone who could make studying English enjoyable and move at his pace I certainly found that person in Paula.

We had weekly sessions from Nov 16 through to the GCSE exams in May/June. She understood the new curriculum and was able to provide me with an insight with what was required. I asked to sit in for the first few sessions so I could get an idea of the way my son interacted with Paula and what types of things they worked on. I found sitting in on the sessions really valuable for me and continued to do this through to the exams. This provided me with really valuable information which enabled me to support my son in-between sessions with Paula she was more than happy for me to do this.

She was very thorough in her approach and was always well prepared for the sessions. She would always review the positive elements of his work first and was extremely encouraging whilst being very clear on what he could have done better and what ways he could achieve this. Homework was set every week which we would e mail through before the next session so Paula had the chance to review the work. This meant that feedback and discussion was given immediately at the start of the session and my son wasn`t sat waiting for his work to be reviewed.

My son was always positive about the sessions and really felt he was making progress.

I cannot recommend Paula highly enough. She is a warm and caring person as well as a great tutor. My only regret is we didn`t find her sooner.

Tutors Response :

Dear Alison and Lewis
Thanks so so much for this wonderful feedback. It has been a real pleasure working with both of you, and discovering the areas of English in which Lewis does actually have rather an aptitude or talent, not just focusing on the areas for improvement! Well done Lewis, for putting in the work, too! I wish you both all the best.

Paula is the embodiment of what all teachers should be. She is interested and excited by her subject and is able to convey this to her students. She is also interested in her students and goes the extra mile to ensure they understand. My daughter will never be a fan of English, but she has looked forward to and really enjoyed her tutor sessions with Paula by putting the novels/plays/poems into context, based on the cultural beliefs of the times, Paula was able to convey the various writers` meanings. With English Language she was able to help my daughter with the structure of her essays and was happy to mark any work she did. She also always took into account my daughter`s SEN needs - she instilled a confidence in her abilities something school failed to do.
I can`t recommend Paula highly enough she has been a godsend and in my daughter`s words on the morning of her GCSE exam - `I don`t know where I would be if it wasn`t for Paula`.

Updated: 19.09.17: I can highly recommend Paula for tuition , she is helpful , friendly , dedicated and really engages with ones child. While she tutors my daughter in English I also asked her to help with R.E as , in my mind , the subjects mechanics are the same . My daughter was predicted an E in her mocks . Amazingly after 6 weeks with Paula she managed a B ! This just shows the impact a good tutor can have , my only advice is to have regular sessions and to give them time ; atleast 1 / 1.5 yrs

Tutors Response :

Thanks so, so much for your lovely feedback, Swithun! It`s much appreciated.
