Information about Annie

I graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA in English Literature and Language, a subject I love. I have been working as a tutor for the past five years with a range of students, teaching KS3, GCSE, A-level, BA, general homeschooling and also as working as an EFL teacher.

I offer high-level tuition in English Literature/English Language (Levels: BA Degree, A/AS-level, GCSE, KS3/2, primary), EFL, and also offer help with university admissions/interviews and personal statements, with a specialist knowledge of Oxbridge applications. I have now amassed over a thousand hours of teaching time.

In terms of my creative background, I am a Barbican Young Poet 2017-2018, a London Writers Awardee 2018, and won the BBC proms young poet 2011, and was runner up for Times Young Poet 2012. Most recently, I have performed professionally at the Barbican, Jazz Verse Jukebox at the Hoxton Hall, Phoenix Artist’s Club, Hammer and Tongue Solent, and on the main stage at Walthamstow Garden Party. I also run poetry and creative writing workshops as a freelance artist.

In my work, I want to find out what it is that really interests a pupil, and to use this to inform my teaching. I have loved working with children and young people, and as a tutor, I am patient but firm, and creative in my teaching methods- able to adapt to the pupil and their needs. I relish performance and I feel an element of theatricality can be helpful in tuition. Giving students a love of reading aloud and speaking the literature is a crucial part of my practise. Works should come alive, and not be present to students only as dead texts, frozen on the page.

I feel my students should have a space to be creative, whether that’s in performing, or writing. As a poet, I know how incredible it feels to read in front of a listening audience- how powerful being seen and recognised makes you. I think that pupils have a right and a need to be creative, and to have their work celebrated too, whether that’s academically or artistically. As a tutor, I create an affirmative, positive space where my tutees are proud of their work and achievements, and really engage with the material at hand. I feel this passion is the best way to ensure high marks at exam level, so students can tap into this enthusiasm, and gain a creative edge on other candidates.

A solid grounding in exam technique acts as the backbone of my teaching- ensuring that my students have a clear structure to work within, so that mark schemes are not abstract or intimidating, but familiar guidelines to follow. Students gain greater confidence in their work when they have a strong understanding of the objectives they need work towards to attain the best results. Giving exceptionally detailed written and verbal feedback is an important part of my method, so that students have a helpful record of their aims and their achievements to look back on during revision and exam season.

Experience: I have worked as a tutor for five years, teaching pupils at a range of ages, teaching subjects such as English Language and Literature, Spanish, Latin, History and Creative Writing. I started tutoring early- in sixth form, I took part in my secondary school’s Tuition and Education Co-operative (Shine), and worked there as an English tutor, providing one-on-one tuition for “low attainment” and in some cases, quite challenging pupils.

It is wonderful to see how my students have gained a new-found confidence in their creative and academic writing, and how some children and adults truly blossomed, given care and interest in their work. I have now been tutoring full-time for the past year, and have really enjoyed my lessons with a number of different student, teaching an array of qualifications and subjects. I have been really pleased with my GCSE students` results this year- several of my pupils have achieved the 8/9 mark, equivalent to A/A* grades.

In the past three years, I have volunteered for Futures in their Oxbridge Access programmes, which works to increase access to Oxbridge and higher education for low-income and first generation state school pupils. In the past year, I provided tuition for the ELAT entry exam, as well as holding mock interviews, with several students, to support them through their application to Oxbridge. As someone who participated in this programme when I was a sixth- former, I feel very proud of the progress that my students have made- especially as one of my students, from a particularly disadvantaged background was offered a place at Cambridge to study English in the coming year.

Annie (Ms) she has been very helpful to my children English support needs. The first three weeks she assessed my child to find weaknesses and strength then put more focus to help improve on the weaknesses bringing him to the same level with strength side. She then later balanced the tutoring making sure the child stays focused on improving his English learning around all areas. I would recommend Annie to anyone who needs support in English.
