Information about Gemma

I am a recent Neuroscience graduate (1st Class Hons) from the University of Oxford and am currently studying for a masters in Cognitive and Decision Sciences at UCL.

I am friendly, patient, and enthusiastic. I have volunteered at summer camps, and love working with children and young people. I spent a year after finishing my undergrad working as a Teaching Assistant at The Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service, located on the children`s ward at Springfield Hospital, London. There, I worked with children aged 12-18 with a range of abilities and SEN needs in both group and 1:1 settings.

I am diligent and well-organised, and am able to strike the right balance between working hard and being friendly, as I feel students are best able to learn when there is mutual respect. I believe that no maths or science concept is beyond anyone`s capabilities, and that it is a question of gaining confidence and experience. In the first meeting, I discuss the student’s needs with them and create structured lesson plans tailored to them. I typically set my own problem sheets, though am happy to help students with their own homework or exercises.

I grew up in London and went to St Paul`s Girls` School, where I achieved 12A*s at GCSE and 4A*s at A Level (Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Biology)
In my spare time I love to go to the theatre, bake and go to the gym.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or queries you may have!

Experience: I have extensive experience of helping students in Maths, Biology and Chemistry, having tutored throughout sixth form and university.
I spent the last academic year working as a Teaching Assistant at The Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service, located on the children`s ward at Springfield Hospital, London. There, I worked with children aged 12-18 with a range of abilities and SEN needs in both group and 1:1 settings. I loved the variety of subjects I covered, from teaching English as a second language to one student to teaching aspects of the Further Maths A-Level to another.

In addition, I tutored 7 students (ranging from 10-16yrs) full time this year.
In the past, I have tutored Maths at 11+, 13+, GCSE and A-Level standard, as well as Physics, Chemistry and Biology to GCSE standard, and Biology to A-Level standard.
I have a 100% success rate in helping 11+ and 13+ students get into their desired schools, and my students have seen a marked improvement in their test scores throughout the year.

Gemma is such a lovely tutor. She is warm and approachable and very quickly built a good rapport with my daughter, who is quite shy. She explains things in a way my daughter finds easy to understand and in a way that makes her feel confident about her learning. She is kind and patient and always goes at the right pace for my daughter, ensuring she is confident about each topic before moving onto the next. Gemma is obviously hugely talented and knowledgable and is a great tutor. I would recommend her highly.
