Information about Emma

Hi!
I`m looking for students in Philosophy and in classical guitar.

For Philosophy: Philosophical questions have occupied me for the last 8 years (and longer!) and I would love to help new students develop their interests in them too. The areas in which I am most specialised are logic and philosophy of language (the topic of my PhD was linguistic vagueness), but I`m really happy to teach a wide range of topics up to an undergraduate level, including how to write good Philosophy, and to offer advice and discussion on a basis that suits you.

For guitar: I`m looking for new students with whom I can share my enthusiasm for the instrument and its music. As well as all the obvious `technical` stuff, I offer lessons with a focus on self-direction - my goal is to help players set and achieve their own goals, develop their own understanding of how to interpret and relate to the music they are playing, and decide on a programme that will enable them to really enjoy what they are doing.

I welcome both children and adults, at any level of ability.

Availability: I can be available at most times - get in touch and we can work out a time :)

For classical guitar, I offer a free initial consultation where I can get a feel for where you are already (if you can already play to some level) and can get an idea of what your goals are.

Willing to travel: 2 miles

Experience: In December 2018 I completed my PhD in Philosophy here in Sheffield, after having completed an MLitt in it at the St Andrews/Stirling Graduate Programme (gaining a distinction in coursework), and a BA (first class) at Nottingham University. During the time I studied in Sheffield, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant. This involved running first-year undergraduate seminars, as well as having one-to-one sessions with students to discuss essay plans, for example. I also gave 7 weeks` worth of lectures as part of the third-year/master`s course `Advanced Logic` and delivered seminars for that.

Since September 2018, I`ve taken up work as a private tutor, teaching a few students in classical guitar and philosophy. I`ve found so far that I much prefer the depth of discussion that you can have in a one-to-one setting, and feel that this kind of teaching is where I really flourish.

Testimonials:
"Emma is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and instructive teacher. She is always encouraging and a great source of positivity when you are struggling with something." - Steve

"Emma is an excellent teacher! I knew nothing in guitar and she has not only shown me how to play some songs, but encouraged my own exploration of the instrument by explaining how different sounds fit together in a general way. Like music theory I suppose, but in a fun and practical way that inspires me to push forward on my own genuine journey with guitar. She is patient and perceptive and gives very helpful advice, as well as being a fun, relaxed person to spend time with. I enjoy every one of our sessions and am very grateful for her inspiring me musically. :)" - Sabina
