Information about Jim

I am a qualified English teacher with a Master`s and a Degree in Philosophy. I also have a TEFL qualification. I offer Philosophy tuition up to degree level and English and English Literature tuition up to Key Stage 5. I teach online and locally around Lancaster.

I believe in seeing my students` independent work rewarded, so, as well as student-adapted subject tutoring, I will also mark any past papers or other work my students send to me, offering detailed written and/or verbal feedback on subject content as well as on grammar and writing style. Practice makes perfect and providing dedicated time to help individual pupils understand how to develop their work is one of the most valuable services a tutor can offer.

I aim to help my students improve their writing, not just their grades. As a qualified English teacher, I know examiner expectations as well as tips and shortcuts for writing and planning, but I also know that examiners don`t just want to read the same artificial answer. Writing in a way that is concise, coherent and fluent counts for a whole lot to a boring exam or coursework marker. I aim to help my students develop their writing in this way too, setting them up for the rest of their lives and not just their assessments.

Availability: I am often free during the day but am regularly free after 3PM Monday to Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Willing to travel: 10 miles

Experience: As well as my teaching experience in local secondary schools, I worked in school outreach through my university, leading activity days for visiting primary school children. I also helped with a philosophy summer school for visiting Sixth Form students at the university.
