Information about James

I hold a [distinction] art foundation degree from London College Of Communication and a first-class joint honours degree in American Literature & Creative Writing from the University Of East Anglia. I achieved A/A*s in English Literature, Language and Art throughout my GSCE and A-levels, and for a while at university, I ran a writing society, building a membership of over fifty students to attend weekly sessions. I’ve always loved that tutoring provides an opportunity to make a profound positive impact on a person’s life, and I feel it’s a privilege to be involved in this process.

Experience: I have worked as a private tutor for the last two years. My tutees are from ages 11 to 18 years old in English Literature and English Language. My experience largely spans from 11+ to A-level, but since I graduated earlier this year, I have also been working with undergraduate literature students, guiding them through coursework and preparation for exams.

I strive to create a solid rapport with my tutees, finding and nurturing what motivates them with the subject, focussing on building an enjoyment of the subject that aids their concentration within and beyond the sessions.

In schools, the basics are too often not given the necessary attention because they are understood by the teacher as easy to learn. I recognise that, regularly, this is not the case, and the voices of students who haven’t grasped the basics are drowned out by the term’s progress. I see the place of the tutor as someone who can bring these students up to the speed of class progress, building confidence in core study areas, and preparing them for the exam season.

I have a passion for communicating ideas. Having overcome my own learning difficulties at school, I understand how challenging school years can be. I believe that once the subject’s core concepts are thoroughly understood, a student’s adeptness in reaching its complexities (and attaining high grades) will follow.
