Information about Stuart

I have taught mathematics at various secondary schools for four years, and have in my previous and most recent school been the deputy head of the maths department. I am currently working at Queen Mary University, London.

I am a graduate of Mathematics from the University of St Andrews, receiving a first class MA there. Every year - 4 in total - I was on the Deans` List for achieving a GPA of 16.5 (I class) or more. I received a medal of academic achievement in my 2nd year, and my thesis was shortlisted for a medal.

I studied my PGCE at the Institute of Education (now part of UCL), where my educational essays gained the highest grades possible.

My A levels and GCSE results are equally academically sound - an A* in GCSE Maths, and an A in A level Maths and Further Maths. For A level I studied a broad range of topics - Mechanics (1,2), Statistics (1,2), Discrete (1,2), and Numerical Methods (1), alongside the required pure modules.

Availability: I am available weekday evenings and on weekends.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: I have taught in three schools in East and South East London, meeting students from a variety of backgrounds. I have taught in whole-class settings, as well as smaller intervention settings. My teaching has covered KS3 and KS4, and I have tutored students including up to KS5.

My most recent tutees include students studying for GCSE Foundation, GCSE Higher, and IB Mathematics - all of whom successfully achieved their desired results, moving on to their chosen paths. My most recent GCSE cohort included a "Foundation" student who I recommended for Higher GCSE, they ended up achieving a grade 7 this Summer. I am currently tutoring students studying for GCSE, IGCSE, and IB Higher Mathematics.

Having worked with students in formal and less formal environments I have learnt that every individual must be tutored in their own way. Some students require assistance in understanding "why" questions in order to grasp abstract concepts, others need reassurance that the methods they are applying are appropriate. Some students relish in deep conversations about more challenging topics, while others prefer the basics to be covered in more detail. Ultimately, tutoring needs to be adapted to the individual.
