Information about Cassie

Oxford University (English), CELTA (language teacher training). Experienced, personable tutor.

Hello, I`m Cassie. I went to Oxford University where I read English Literature, and subsequently trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. I am CELTA trained, with a pass B, a grade awarded to the top 15% of English Language teacher trainees. I am DBS checked.

As well as tutor, I act in and direct theatre productions. This work has many transferrable skills: people management, empathy, leadership, discipline and encouragement. Perhaps most importantly, it requires quickly forming trusting relationships, which is essential in 1:1 teaching environments.

The advantage of personal tutoring is that the teaching approach can be fine-tuned to the individual student`s learning style. Importantly, within the framework of a structured and well planned lesson, the learning process should be fun, making the knowledge far easier to retain.

With adult learners in particular, I look to eventually put myself out of a job, having given the student the skills necessary to learn independently.

Availability: I am available weekdays and weekday evenings. I usually travel to my student`s homes to teach, though we can also meet in coffee shops, libraries or in my home.

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: I have been a tutor for four years, and have significant experience in classrooms and 1:1 environments and with child and adult learners.

I am particularly good with students who need motivation and confidence building, and study skills support.

I have taught 7+, 8+, 11+, 13+ and 16+ exams, as well as GCSE and A-Level, all with consistent success. I have worked on degree papers and I am an experienced proof reader.

I have taught all levels of EFL students from beginner to advanced, in classrooms and 1:1, and the IELTS paper.

I am also experienced with interview technique: whilst working for the company Oxbridge Applications, I designed and ran their interview skills workshops.

I can also offer comprehensive mentoring for drama school applications.

SELECTED STUDENT CASE STUDIES

13+ English Support, student applying to Westminster. January 2016-current
Rupert is currently at Westminster Under and is hoping to gain a scholarship to Westminster Upper school. When we began working together, he had gained 54% in his most recent Geography test, and was in the bottom quarter percentile of the marks in his class for English. 6 weeks later, after working with him twice a week for two hour sessions, Rupert gained 80% in his recent Geography test, and moved into the middle percentile for his English test. He also gained an A- on a recent creative writing essay, and continues rapidly to improve. He has high chances of obtaining the scholarship he desires.
UPDATE: I am very pleased to announce that Rupert has won his scholarship to Westminster Upper School! We will be continuing lessons to expand his enjoyment of English.

iGCSE English Language Easter half term intensive study, March-April 2016: Eyitayo is an extremely bright boy; particularly good at Science and Maths, but a reluctant English student. We worked together over his three week break, on all aspects of the English iGCSE, in daily two hour sessions. The progress we made was remarkable. Eyitayo found how to enjoy English, to engage with texts, and to inject his personality into his writing. I will be working with Eyitayo periodically when he returns to London from boarding school.

Private Tuition 1:1, Diploma level overseas student EFL and study skills.
Jason is 19 and from Korea, and a long term student of mine. He is studying for a Business Diploma at the London South Bank University. Since October 2014, over one or two two hour sessions a week, I have been helping him with essay writing skills, expanding his academic vocabulary, general study skills, and work on the IELTS paper.

Private tuition 1:1. Year 8 student English Literature, Shakespeare and homework support.
Travis, in year 8, needed help understanding Shakespeare, and with general English essay writing skills. When we began our sessions, Travis was unconfident, disengaged, didn`t have a full grasp of the material and was consequently achieving marks of around 65%. Our sessions together culminated in exams before the Christmas break. Travis came top of the class in English, achieving marks of 90%+. His teacher told him his response to Macbeth was the best essay he had read in years.

Private Tuition 1:1, Adult Learner EFL, extended speaking practice.
Magdalena is a native Polish speaker, but she and her husband travel frequently, and she was never been able to concentrate on learning English. Consequently, she made frequent, simple mistakes in her spoken language. Over a couple of months we spent three hours a day together, three times a week, with one hour textbook study and two hours speaking practice rapidly to improve her spoken English. Lessons included visiting museums, studying newspapers and discussing current events. Magdalena`s contemporaries commented on her rapid progress.
