Information about Sophie

I have achieved a Distinction in Grade 8 piano, Distinction in Grade 7 theory, and I am currently working towards a Performance Diploma (dipABRSM) whilst tutoring full-time. I have been teaching for 2 years, and my students have included advanced players, beginners, children and adults. Classical piano is the area I specialise in, though I have also taught other styles including Pop and Jazz. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had excellent teachers and as such have developed a high technical skill level, gained in depth knowledge of Music History and Theory, learned an abundance of practicing techniques, and how to critique and analyse my own practice. I believe that having this strong foundation feeds into my teaching, and I am able to provide students with the necessary skills to excel in their piano playing. I am incredibly passionate about playing the piano, and I believe that this is reflected in my teaching. Many people have commented that my genuine enthusiasm makes them feel more inspired to practice. I am very dedicated to all of my pupils and they always achieve excellent results. My greatest pleasure comes from watching my students grow and achieve things they thought were not possible.

My aim for students and approach to teaching:

In our lessons my students will learn how to play piano with good technique, to play pieces musically in a variety of styles and how to read music or improve their sight-reading. I also incorporate learning Music Theory and History into the lessons which is explained in relation to the pieces being learned. I encourage my students to be inquisitive and to think independently by asking questions that lead them to find the answer themselves. In particular, I remind students to apply the knowledge they have to work out something they don’t know. A process of approaching new music is instilled, which enables my students to continue learning by themselves outside of the lessons.
For intermediate and advanced players, I go into great detail about the many intricacies involved in the technique of playing the piano, such as how the slightest adjustment in touch or hand position can produce an entirely different sound. I am very perceptive and observant and can quickly determine the possible reasons why a student might be struggling with a certain exercise and provide solutions as to how they can improve. For beginners I have a system of breaking down the musical concepts in a simple way that is easy to follow, which gives students a sense of accomplishment from early on and motivates them to continue.

- Learning as a hobby

I am proficient in preparing students for ABRSM exams through to Grade 8, and my pupils have a 100% pass rate. I personally really enjoyed working towards music exams as I found great satisfaction in achieving each grade, and having a deadline gave me more determination, focus, and structure to my piano practice. Furthermore, the syllabus covers a broad range of skills which will enable you to develop the technique to play pieces of a variety of styles. I have an extensive knowledge of the exam criteria and am confident in preparing pupils to succeed.
I am aware that music exams aren’t for everyone! There’s plenty that can be learned through practicing pieces that you enjoy. With these lessons I still include advice on how to play with good technique, and I usually work through pieces of increasing difficulty, while encouraging my students to choose pieces themselves as well. The most important thing for me is that the student likes the sound of the piece, as this will always make them more motivated to practice! I don’t advocate either learning style, but rather explain the benefits of both and encourage my students to chose the path that is most suited to them.
I also offer separate music theory lessons, particularly for those who need to pass Grade 5 theory before taking their Grade 6 practical exam. I can cover the syllabus effeciently to ensure my students are thoroughly prepared. Theory classes can also be beneficial for those studying GCSE / A level Music.

Learning to play the piano is a lifetime endeavour, and can bring a lot of joy along the way. If you are ready for the challenge I would be delighted to assist you on your piano playing journey.
