Information about Tom
Please note that I tutor only online until further notice.
I completed a PhD in fluid dynamics (mechanical engineering) at the University of Bristol in 2019, having studied maths (BA+MMath) at Clare College, University of Cambridge. With strong mathematical experience, I tutor further maths A-level and university entrance exams, such as STEP for maths at Cambridge and Warwick.
In addition to A-level, I cover maths for both GCSE and adults who want to learn more of the subject at any level. Tutoring for physics to A-level and GCSE sciences is also available.
At degree level, my specialism is fluid dynamics, but will cover other areas of applied maths and mathematical methods for engineers and physicists. Please enquire about other areas you are interested in, as I may be able to help.
A combination of excellent teachers and hard work has allowed me to enjoy a stimulating time at university. I want to make sure that you can fulfil your academic potential too, whether you are a high-flyer or someone who needs that extra explanation, to get where you want to be.
Availability: I offer both flexible and regular sessions at most times any day of the week. Longer term, orienteering competitions may resume on some weekend daytimes, Wednesday daytimes and Thursday evenings, so I would prefer to restrict these slots to flexible, rather than regular, bookings. The matrix below shows my availability this week.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: For four years during my PhD, I taught engineering students mathematical methods (1st and 2nd year), computer programming (1st and 2nd year) and fluids (3rd year and masters level). These ranged in style from drop-in sessions, one-to-one help in larger classrooms and lab demonstrations. More recently, I have worked in a school as a scribe for A-level physics and chemistry, both for classwork and exams.
