Information about Bethany
Most recently I have been a full-time English teacher at a large comprehensive in Crawley where I have had the opportunity to teach KS3 and KS4, gaining extensive knowledge and skills of both students individual progress and the skills required by exam boards and curriculum. Teaching at the school for the last year has provided me with a large range of resources for all GCSE and KS3 texts.
Prior to this I completed my PGCE in secondary English at the University of Oxford where I conducted a number of research projects, for example, using images effectively to help lower attaining students confidence when accessing challenging texts and using critical thinking to make inferences about these texts.
In 2015 I graduated from the University of Sussex with a BA hons in English and then went on to work for Apple Retail UK as a technical specialist. I am now heading back to the University of Sussex to start my MA in Gender and Media and will be tutoring alongside my studies.
I am a reliable and bubbly character who favours student lead, creative learning. I have just started teaching myself to sew and it`s becoming a hobby I really enjoy - it`s still a work in progress but I`ll get there one day! Aside from sewing, I play piano, go to gigs, and have a brilliant and weird cockapoo.
Availability: I am available weekday daytimes and weekends.
Willing to travel: 8 miles
Experience: I have a PGCE from the University of Oxford and I have been teaching KS3 & KS4 English literature and language at a large comprehensive one Crawley for the past year.
In addition to this, a few summers ago I taught English language at a secondary and primary school in rural northern Thailand for three months. This was an immensely challenging yet rewarding experience, as the village I was in spoke no English and had very few resources. But I managed to adapt to the freezing cold showers, buffalo roaming the roads and squat toilets... I even picked up a bit of Thai! When I was there I got the opportunity to teach classes of 30 children, private tutor some of the children for an English competition, and organise a two day English camp for the schools.
During my final year of university I assisted with workshops for secondary school children about sexual consent and mental health as part of the university union`s `Role Models` programme. These two topics are something that is not on the national curriculum, but are incredibly vital for young people to understand.
