Information about Russell

I have just completed a PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics, and am now working as a tutor full-time. During my studies I have authored on three published research papers and two more will be published in the near future. Furthermore, as part of my studies I produced a 200+ page thesis on the production of dark matter in the early Universe. Before my PhD, I completed a four year integrated masters degree in Physics, graduating with first class honours.

Learning topics in Physics and Maths can often be a daunting task, but I believe it is achievable to persons of any level. When a student is having difficulty understanding a topic, I believe it is a matter of finding the correct way to teach it, tailored to the individual. Having experienced them myself, I understand the frustrations and `fear factors` that come with understanding these subjects: from confusing textbooks, classroom group-learning that isn`t working for you, to being worried about asking "stupid" questions. It is a joy for me to help other people with these issues that I once faced.

Whether you are having trouble with Physics and Maths as a whole, or are more comfortable with the key topics and require additional tuition tackling the more involved concepts, working together we can overcome these problems.

Note on online lessons: I have a writing tablet and software, which allows me to transmit a virtual whiteboard during these sessions as an aid to teaching. Therefore Skype lessons in the past have proven successful.

Availability: I am available to teach weekdays and weekends, during the day and evening. I have several tutees at the moment, and my schedule fluctuates as it depends on their own, so please get in contact if you`d like to know more.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring full-time for half a year now, taking on several students taking there GCSEs and A-levels in Maths and Physics, with a wide range of needs.

Previous to tutoring, I have assisted in the teaching of several undergraduate courses, helping students solve and understand complex problems. I have also marked the work of several courses, which provided key insight into the troubles and hurdles faced by individuals learning the subject.

Through my PhD studies, I have also given talks at a variety of institutions, including the Royal Society, Imperial College London, UCL, Royal Holloway, University of Southampton, and the University of Sussex.

Numerous times I also undertook the opportunity to participate in outreach events, teaching GCSE/A-level students and members of the general public.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating! Russell tutored my son for approximately 4 months in Alevel maths with some sessions of Alevel physics thrown in. He was a great tutor, patient, thorough and explained things in a way my son could understand. With Russell’s tutoring my son went from a solid B grade to an A/A* Student. He has now gained a place at a top Russell Group University to study Civil Engineering. Suffice to say I would highly recommended Russell as a tutor.

My son is currently studying A level Physics. He was struggling to get to grips with some of the A2 modules. I contacted Russell and arranged for him to have a session with my son. They hit it off from the start and Russell put together a plan. They agreed some aspect of the subject my son would have to work on his own. The more challenging areas they would go over together. This has worked and I have noticed my son’s confidence has increased over the months. They are currently going over exam papers. My son is much more positive about the subject and will be ready for his exams this summer.

Russell is an experienced physics tutor and would highly recommend him to anyone.
