My approach with primary kids is to explain complex concepts using real life examples. This has ways been very effective in teaching them about a challenging topic.
On the other hand, students in secondary school are first introduced a topic with all the rules and then they attempt exam style questions to firm their understanding to of the topic.

I ensure each student goes through an exam to assess their performance. Upon completion, they get feedback depending on the results of the assessment a previous topic is reviewed or a new concept is taught.
