Information about John

I am very flexible with tutees over the arrangements and times for lessons either at pupils or my own house. I like to think I give a simple practical way of learning the principle of maths.
I enjoy giving pupils the confidence that they can do maths, I give them some basic rules to follow, I have been very successful in taking students who are predicted not to achieve grade 4 at GCSE (college entrance requirements) to a successful outcome. I am so confident that you will be happy with my tutoring, that if you are not, then please don`t pay me.
I currently work two days a week providing maths tuition at a local secondary school, I also have private adult learners as well as pupils seeking GCSEs.
ABOUT YOU
I specialise in helping pupils get the GCSE maths grade they need so that they can go to college or sixth form and fulfil their true potential. Maths can be a pain but it is necessary. It needs to be taught in a fun and engaging manner that is matched to the pupil’s personality and learning style.
The majority of my students are looking for a Foundation level grade 4, my approach is to layout the easiest path to achieving the grade 4 qualification. I do this by understanding the current level and then covering the essentials (not all 28 questions need to be answered to get a grade 4), making it meaningful, prioritising the easy wins and making it fun (yes it can be!).
Over the last 10 years, I have helped many students of achieve Maths GCSE qualification, including students with a range of special educational needs (SEND) and home schooled. Depending on your dedication we can make a real difference within a short period! ( one hour tutoring is worth more than 6 in the school classroom)
Maths is not for everyone and has been taught the same away for years as schools must follow a prescribed route of the National Curriculum following the pace of the class, regardless if you are up to speed or not, I can deviate from this by asking direct one to one questions to find out what the student really understands.
EXPERIENCE
I completed my PGCE at the University of Brighton in 2007, I taught in Bognor and Horsham schools up to GCSE level. I have worked as a maths tutor since then as well as currently teaching one-on-one in a local secondary school.

APPROACH
I believe that the student has to be motivated and engaged. Maths is best taught through practical examples which are specific to the individual student for example if the goal is carpentry at college we will talk about wood dimensions! This makes maths relevant and easy to remember.
I create an action plan for achieving the students required grade needed for their goal. This approach is motivational for the student as they can see a plan against time (with measures) to achieve their GCSE.

Experience: I am a retired ex Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a qualified PGSE maths teacher. I have been teaching maths privately for several years, I have used maths all my working life and give simple practical examples of how maths is used in industry. I have been tutoring privately for several years and references are available.
I currently provide maths tuition two days a week at a local secondary school.

I needed a maths tutor for my son as he wasn`t getting the help he needed at school and it was looking unlikely that he would pass his GCSE exams. He started lessons with John in February 2020 and right from the start, he found that John explained things in a way that he could understand. John went through each GCSE maths topic and gave my son past papers to practice with and by the end of his lessons, he was achieving over 70% on these papers, something he has not been able to achieve before. John has fully prepared my son for the exams which he has just sat and we are fully confident he will pass. I can honestly say that my son got more out of his twice weekly lessons with John over 9 months than he did during his entire time at secondary school and we want to thank him so much for everything. I would highly recommend John for maths tutoring.

John is a very intelligent and interesting person, who understands to make the subject exciting. It was a big boost for my son to not only understand but now actually enjoy maths.
John even asked us parents some maths questions. Now we are all "in" - no escape. I have lots of confidence that my son`s gaps will be filled in no time as he is now very motivated.
Absolutely recommend John!
