Information about James

** Online lessons available and new students of all ages and abilities welcome! I allow any additional time necessary (free of charge) for any technical issues throughout the session. So far, issues have been extremely minimal and working remotely has not stopped or limited the progress of students. **

Hello and thanks for stopping by. I’m James, a Piano and Music Theory tutor based in South-West London. I consider piano to be my primary instrument, however my first love was the guitar and I’ve amassed fifteen years of experience between the two instruments, five of these years based in London. During this time, I graduated from The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance with a first class honours and I have performed in various bands and venues throughout London.
Some of my proudest moments include heading at Ronnie’s Bar above Ronnie Scotts, a music industry night at ‘Tape London’ in Oxford Circus, performing and being interviewed live on ‘Resonance FM’ Radio Station and performing at Kensington Roof Gardens for an EP launch.
My proudest teaching achievement is having a student achieve 100% in their grade 5 theory exam.

Availability: I am available to teach all levels, from beginner to advanced and all age groups from 10 years old upwards. Lessons can take place at my home in Brixton or I can travel to areas within a one hour distance on public transport. Days/times are fairly flexible.

My rates are listed below and are the same for both Piano and Music Theory classes. There is also a 25% discount on first lessons.

30 mins - £20
60 mins - £30
90 mins - £40
120 mins - £50

I look forward to hearing from you!

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: ** Lessons are currently taking place exclusively remotely. My preferred platform is currently Zoom but can accommodate Facetime, Skype, Google Hangouts and any new up and coming programmes. **
;

I specialise in Jazz and music theory and my main areas of expertise are jazz harmony, chords/chord voicings, comping, improvisation and soloing techniques. I don’t limit my teaching just to jazz however, I’m also available to teach other genres such as pop, rock, blues and funk, and cover activities such as ear training, songwriting/composition and sight-reading. I have a relaxed and informal teaching style and cater my lessons to the goals and wishes of the student, whether you wish to become a full-time professional musician or simply learn how to play some of your favourite tunes.

I am a very strong believer in creativity and freedom of expression when it comes to playing, so I tend to teach the general fundamental ‘rules’ of music before encouraging students to break them (when appropriate!) to fully develop their own musical voice.
; I use a mixture of my own material and published books.

James has been a great teacher for me and has helped improve my piano playing significantly. We have been focusing in jazz improvisation, which he has broken down in a clear and methodical manner. I would highly recommend him!!
