Information about Phil

I am an English teacher with a high class English degree and a PGCE specialising in English. Since graduating I have taught a wide range of students with varying degrees of ability. I have experience in teaching Functional Skills, GCSE and A Level English Language and Literature. I currently work as an English teacher for a local FE college, as a result of this I have a strong knowledge of exam boards and their requirements. I know what examiners are looking for and how to develop your child`s English skills quickly and effectively.

As part of my service, I will also liaise with your child`s school (when necessary) so that I can tailor my sessions to what they are working on in school. This will ensure that your child is ready for any upcoming controlled assessments and exams.

I have an infectious enthusiasm towards English and believe that it not only allows students to progress in both work and academia, it also arms them with vital skills for every day life.

I have vast experience in working with people from all walks of life, from mature students to those with special educational needs. Over the past couple of years I have worked with young people with Autism, Asperger`s, ADHD and Dyslexia. I have also worked with young people with complex emotional and behavioural difficulties in a classroom environment and on a small group and 1:1 basis. I believe that my friendly, informal style along with my enthusiasm makes English accessible, fun and removes barriers to learning.

Edward Bulwer-Lyntton wrote, "The pen is mightier than the sword", and I believe this to be true. The ability to use, understand and manipulate language is a vital tool a person needs to progress in the modern world. This is what inspired me to become a teacher and to help young people achieve their goals.
