Information about Elinor

I hold a Masters and Degree in Mathematics from Oxford University. My strengths as an A-level tutor are expert subject knowledge and clarity of explanation. I can empathise with a student`s struggles, identifying common problems. I can also help those who are sailing through the course and want to be stretched. I take an active-learning approach, guiding the student through carefully chosen examples, which deepens their understanding and gives confidence. We save valuable lesson-time by students explaining their thinking out loud rather than writing everything down. This has the benefit of enabling us to cover material faster without sacrificing depth.
I also accept Year 11 students who would like to prepare for Year 12 over the summer.

Availability: I am available evenings, usually from around 5.45pm (except Thursdays and Fridays).

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: I`ve been tutoring since 2018. Before that, I had seven years of working professionally with children and young people, and I`m a mother of three young children. I have experience of helping both struggling students and those looking to be stretched.
Some examples of my achievements in tuition:
I was working with one student who I thought might have an undiagnosed maths-specific learning difficulty. I spoke to his parent about this, who in conjunction with the school secured him extra time in his exams. I also came up with a plan of what we needed to do to help him succeed. He achieved his target grade and was thrilled.
Another student was working at an A for his A-Level, but aiming for an A* as he wanted to study medicine at a top university. We met for a short period for intensive study. I chose questions to stretch him and also covered gaps in his knowledge. He achieved an A* and his set to study medicine at UCL.
I helped two young people who had huge gaps in their knowledge due to staffing problems at school. I tailored our sessions to exactly what they were weak on. Both of them achieved their target grades or one higher.
One of my students had got Us in her AS exams and had lost her confidence in maths. We only worked together for a few months but she enjoyed our sessions immensely and felt much more positive going into her exams. She achieved an E, which she was satisfied with.
I have recently started using the method of narration in my tutorials, which had proven highly effective. For more information about this, see my article entitled `Using `Narration` in Maths Tutorials`.
