Information about George
I am a figurative and representational artist, trained as a painter, draftsman and sculptor. Having spent 6 years in art education, my insight into art teaching was enhanced by 5 years working as a Supervisor & Technician at The Royal Drawing School, during which time I assisted over 50 art teachers.
I believe that teachers have an important role to provide students with the tools and inspiration to continue learning in their own time. Whilst the lessons I would teach are intended to produce immediate `results`, they would also hopefully continue to benefit for the long-term. I am committed to and passionate about art, and believe that painting and drawing in particular can enhance life, providing an opportunity to connect with nature; to study light and space; to see beauty in the everyday; to slow down and heighten awareness; to nurture imagination and express something personal; or to just let go and enjoy the process and materials.
My work as an artist is varied, covering `plein aire` landscape and cityscape oil painting; imaginative and symbolic narrative painting, and abstraction. I believe that an artist or student should have knowledge and experience of a wide range of art ideas, techniques and processes, before they attempt to `find their voice`, and also that the different `visual languages` can nurture each other.
For examples of my recent drawings and oil paintings please scroll to the bottom of this page and click on `Photo Gallery`.
LESSON INFORMATION
My approach to teaching is planned and structured, but open to individual student requirements.
I don`t believe in drawing from photographs, as drawing is about genuine connection with the subject which is best achieved when it is directly in front of you.
Media used may include: charcoal, pencil, oil paints, ink, gauche and watercolour.
Lesson Plan 1:
I would suggest that daytime lessons be based in the city centre, perhaps meeting at the National Gallery where we would do any or all of the following: discuss goals for the lesson; discuss aspects of the collection; draw experimental reinterpretations of works in the collection; venture outside to draw people and spaces, in or around Trafalgar Square, the Thames and South-bank, Soho, St James Park, wherever you feel comfortable; roundup with a critique and discuss homework.
Lesson Plan 2:
Alternatively I can meet you in a location convenient for you, in or around your home, in which case we might combine any or all of the following: experiment with materials and processes to produce imaginative, figurative, or abstract works; draw or paint from direct observation of a still-life set up; I can sit for portraits; make studies and experimental interpretations of other artist`s works from reproductions; venture outside to draw or paint people; roundup with a critique and discuss homework.
The aspects of art, drawing and painting we would cover include:
1. Drawing/painting from observation:
Studying: Line; Light; Value or Tone; Shape, Pattern, Geometry; Space; Colour; Movement; Gesture; Rhythm; Atmosphere; Mood; Composition; etc.
2. Drawing/painting imagination and memory:
Thinking about subjects that means something to you personally; how to let the subject emerge through abstract marks which are interpreted and developed upon;
3. Studying art of the past - one of the best ways to draw is to making copies and interpretations of the `Old Masters`. Looking at artists from throughout history, including Titian and Bellini, Corot and Pissarro, Bonnard, Matisse, Picsaso, Auerbach, Kossoff and Uglow, and a list of contemporary painters, who I don`t much approve of, but who might appeal to someone else!
For all lessons I provide recommended reading lists and homework.
Thank you for considering me as your art tutor. Feel free to message me for any further questions.
Regards,
George

Experience: ABOUT
George Rice-Smith is an Artist and Art Technician with Administrative and Supervisory experience through work at The Royal Drawing School and for numerous artists and art galleries.
Born 1988. Based in London and Hampshire.
After completing a conceptual art degree, I applied to study at The Royal Drawing School, wanting to develop my understanding of traditional artistic skills and knowledge, including drawing and composition. Encouraged to draw every day from observation, memory and imagination; from nudes and portraits in the life-room; in the City as well as the natural landscape; reinterpreting stories and poetry; and copying the great art of the past I came to understand drawings potential for investigation, its myriad forms of expression, and its fundamental importance as a skill across the visual arts.
