Information about Nina

Hello! I am an English Literature undergraduate student, and have just completed my second year at Trinity College Dublin. Having been through the pressure of exams myself, I remember all too well how daunting they can be. While revising for my GCSE`s and A Levels, I found a couple of techniques which can really help with stress, time-management and essay writing, and which helped me gain A*s in GCSE and A Level English, and a 1st in both of my two years at university.

More importantly, I hope I can share my own love of English Literature with you. Memorising a list of quotes or fancy literary devices will only get you so far in your English studies, which can make the subject seem intimidating. Yet this is also what makes English so exciting! With a little bit of confidence, any student can offer their own fantastic, and completely original, interpretation of a literary text.

In our first lesson, I will discuss which areas the student is struggling with and which topics they would like to focus on. This will enable me to tailor my sessions to the student`s goals, and preferred methods of learning. I will measure progress by setting exam style questions at the end of a topic covered and mark it for the next session to see if there are still areas that need improving. It might also be helpful to take the student beyond their assigned texts: mark schemes, particularly for A Levels, reward students who can offer alternative avenues of interpretation. If this is something you are interested in, I can introduce you to some critical opinions on a literary work, or we can consider the influence of the context in which a text was written together.

Experience: While I was still at secondary school, I did my work experience at a local primary school, helping assist the teacher with classes and the upcoming drama production, and reading with individual children. After I left school, I volunteered for two months in an orphanage in Sri Lanka, where I conducted classes in English with primary school aged children.

I have always been enthusiastic about writing, and I have lots of experience in this area! My winning entry to the TED talks essay competition featured on their website. In my second-place winning entry to Newnham College Woolf Essay Prize, I explored the progress of women since A Room Of One’s Own was published. In a shortlisted submission for the Connell Guides Essay Competition, I considered the enduring attraction of Austen’s heroine Emma. I also love creative writing: I have written several short stories and scri pts, one of which was shortlisted for the 2017 Benjamin Franklin Literary Prize.

During the course of my degree, I`ve also enjoyed helping friends and my younger brother (who is taking A Level English himself next year). I have found that my own experience of sitting stressful exams helps me understand what current students are going through. I hope to create an encouraging, informal environment, where students feel comfortable asking any question they might have.
