I`m a qualified, experienced Maths teacher living in Oxford, married with two delightful children. I have a real enthusiasm for teaching my subject, and a proven track record of success.


My philosophy

Success in Maths is linked to confidence. Confidence is easy to restore with individual tuition, where we work at the student`s pace with gentle encouragement, clear explanations and guided practice using appropriate examples. With an experienced and qualified teacher, students get someone who already knows what they may find hard, and when to speed up and or slow down. Patience and praise are important, so that students feel comfortable to ask questions and develop deeper understanding.

I give Maths tuition to A-level and IB student to help them achieve the grades they need to meet their university offers. Sometimes I have availability for younger years, e.g. GCSE, IGCSE, Ad Maths and Common Entrance: please feel free to enquire.


Teaching experience and qualifications

I have taught Maths in schools for over 20 years, 14 of them at a well-known independent school in Oxford, and have been Head of Maths in two schools. I have prepared pupils for exams in GCSE, IGCSE, Ad Maths, A-level Maths, A-level Further Maths, IB Maths HL, IB Maths SL and Studies. I have been an examiner for A-level public exams, and I do work for a national Common Entrance exam board. I have prepared pupils for Oxbridge entrance, including giving guidance on what to read and interview practice and feedback on many a UCAS personal statement.

Individual lessons allow students to develop their self-confidence, and give them the time and space to develop understanding and ask questions in a relaxed and unthreatening environment. It may be that you struggle with a particular aspect of Maths, or you have missed a topic because of illness or perhaps you need ongoing support to develop the confidence which comes from having someone experienced and knowledgeable teaching and encouraging you on a regular basis.

Hourly rate

My hourly rate is £160. While you will find tutors who charge less, for example Oxford University students, with an experienced teacher like me you are assured of someone who is able to explain complex concepts in a clear and straightforward way, who has the insight to anticipate what a student might find difficult, who has relevant professional teaching qualifications and years of classroom and one-to-one practice, an in-depth knowledge of the course specification, and an examiner`s knowledge of exam technique. All these factors will give a determined and hard-working student a distinct advantage.

Maths lessons online

Using web-based applications like Scribblar and Skype, students across the world are able to take lessons without leaving home. Many people these days prefer this option, for convenience and ease. My hourly rate for online lessons is £160.
