Information about Stephan

I am a highly skilled tutor with outstanding results to back this up. I quickly increase my students confidence and engagement in science through explicit modelling, instruction and questioning. I understand the exam system extremely well and ‘what examiners are looking for’ due to my extensive experience as an examiner. I quickly form, trusting working relationships with students, identify misconceptions and analyse areas of strengths and weaknesses l. This is achieved through a sensitive and supportive way.

My approach is to teach my students the study skills they need to succeed, whilst building their confidence. This would include methods of learning and how these will be improved.
I also teach the skills needed to answer exam questions by drawing on my extensive experience as a senior science examiner. I have developed resources that meet the requirements of GCSE standard questions that I’ve tried and tested. I also specialise in encoding and retrieval practice. I’m extremely good at identifying ways my pupils and students can assess and improve there answers, identifying misconceptions and using worked example, that students can follow, scaffolding the use of models and remove parts of the scaffolding that is no longer required I use a combination of cognitive science, neuroscience, educational research and informed discussions to consistently improve my practice.

I involve parents as much as possible and often have them in occasional lessons to help them understand the importance of knowledge to application and how they can best support their child. This is useful as any weakness I identify I can relay that to you for further work.
I am extremely reliable and flexible for changes in timings.

I am a Science teacher with over 20 years experience and I have worked in a wide variety of schools from the best 100 in the country to schools in special measures. I teach all three science subjects up to GCSE and Biology at A-level.
I am experienced in the use of zoom and google for lessons online.

I am an experienced examiner in Biology, Chemistry and Physics for AQA and OCR. From 2013 to 2017 I was a team leading examiner in Physics (additional and triple) and Biology (core and additional). I attended meetings to help set the mark scheme and standardise the marking of of the exam papers. I led this through webinars to schools using Gateway/21st century Science. I’ve led around 100 examiners, training them through the process and ensuring they could pass the required criteria to mark competently.

I am also involved in the exam appeal process, by remarking exam papers in Biology and Physics. I have marked triple Biology and additional chemistry.

Currently I work in a small team of seven senior examiners under a Lead Examiner (who writes the biology paper and used to be called Chief Examiner). We are responsible for writing the mark scheme that all pupils across the country will be marked against. I take a leading role in deciding what we will allow marks for questions. I now do this for a second paper, completing Triple Biology, where there is only 3 of us writing the final mark scheme. I have been offered a similar position for physics.

I have also marked papers for AQA: 2 Chemistry papers and 2 Biology papers. I was offered the position of team leader on one of these after only two years of marking the paper.

Currently I develop and deliver resources to present to schools across the country on “How to set up and mark mock papers” for Oxford and Cambridge. I’ve delivered these sessions over 3 year. This year I have accepted contracts to present as ‘Exam Review’ and ‘Speak to the Examiner’.

I have been Head of Science, Second in Science, Lead Teacher (mentoring over a dozen other teachers) and Initial Teacher Trainer (ITT) professional mentor, in charge of monitoring and training teachers to mentor student teachers, so they meet teacher standards. Included in this is to ensure the standardisation of mentoring to ensure consistency across the school.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing from you.

Availability: I am available in the evening, weekends and holidays. It is best to discuss this over tutor hunt. I limit and carefully pick the number of students I take on to ensure I can give them my full attention.

Willing to travel: 8 miles

Experience: My experience is perfect for Hitchin Girls School, Hitchin Boys School, The Saint John Henry Newman School (where I worked for 8 years); Priory, Highfield, Knights Templar, Luton Private Schools e.g. Bedford, Saint Francis and other local Schools. I have tutored many students including a student at HGS from year 10 to 13.
Teacher of 20 years, including Second in Science, Head of Science and lead teacher. I have worked closely with Hertfordshire education authority in developing assessment and the new curriculum (old now) as part of a team of leading teachers in Hertfordshire. This resulted in my work being presented as exemplary model for new curriculum changes. I have led one school in gaining research accreditation.

I have taught at Marriotts, Hitchin boys School, John F Kennedy Catholic School and John Henry Newman Catholic School. I am moving to a school in Luton in September to raise achievement. These five Schools cover a wide range of abilities from 2-9.

I have taught OCR gateway and 21st century, AQA and Edexcel (including international).
My responsibility when I left The Saint John Henry Newman School was professional mentor (Initial Teacher Training in charge of all teachers mentoring trainee teachers). This led to standardised across the school.
I have tutored AQA, OCR gateway, OCR 21st century and iGCSE edexcel. I have taught struggling students (3-4), private school students and 5-9 students.
I am an experienced examiner in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I have also been an examiner who re- marked papers for the appeals process for biology and physics. I only do this for Biology now.
I currently write mark schemes for the GCSE exams where candidates sit in the summer. Over a 4 year period I was a Team Leader of around 100 examiners. This was to standardise them to see if they can mark, feeding back over mistakes made and offering help and advice over candidate responses.
Recently I have also developed materials for schools and presented it via webinar in: “How to set up, standardise and mark mock papers”, for OCR.
