Information about Paul

I am a qualified specialist maths teacher with 9 years teaching experience in English secondary schools and over 4 years private tuition experience. Prior to teaching mathematics I was involved in the computer software industry in a variety of roles from programming to sales. I have lived in Surbiton for over 20 years and am married with two children ages 14 and 16.

I have recently completed a distance learning MSc Statistics at Sheffield University so have some more space for additional students.

The advantage of tutoring over being taught in a class is that the tutor is able to tailor work according to the student`s ability and attainment. Typically students have gaps in their knowledge which are holding them back from progressing. My approach is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the students through diagnostic testing and questioning. Once I have established these areas and understood the student`s goals, I then plan a differentiated programme of study which supports the student`s realistic goals.

Availability: Weekdays.

Willing to travel: 4 miles

Experience: Having attained my secondary school mathematics PGCE from St. Mary`s College in Twickenham, during which time I trained in Tolworth Girls School and the Howard of Effingham, I joined Heathside school in Weybridge. I taught at Heathside for 9 years and left in August 2014.

During my time at Heathside I was the Key Stage 4 (GSCE) coordinator where the A* to C GCSE Maths results improved from 67% to 90% in 2013. I taught maths to all year groups from 7 to 13 across the ability range and have gained extensive knowledge of how children learn mathematics. I was one of the specialist A level teachers and have extensive teaching experience of C1, C2, C3, C4, D1, M1, S1 and S2. I am also a registered GCSE and A level examiner.

Since beginning private tuition in February 2015 I have tutored students from year 5 to year 13. I am very pleased to have helped students achieve grade A`s and A*s in A level and GCSE I am also equally proud of those students who achieved their target grades.

I have helped or am helping students achieve their goals in maths from the following schools: Chessington Community College, Claremont Fan Court School, Cobham Free School, Esher College, Esher High School, George Abbot, Glynn Technology, Guildford High School, Greycourt School, Haliford School, Heathside School, Hollyfield School, Holy Cross School, Latchmere Primary School, Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle Londres, Morehouse School Knightsbridge, Richard Challoner School, Royal Kent C of E Primary School, Saint Andrew`s and Saint Mark`s Primary School, Saint George’s College Weybridge, Southborough School, Teddington School, Tolworth Girls School, Ursuline High School, Wimbledon College.

I have also helped adult learners with GCSE Mathematics and the numeracy section of the QTS skills tests as well as a number of home schooled students and understand the unique challenges faced by this group of students.

For the GCSE and A level students I am able to build upon my examination marking experience to provide specific examination technique guidance. Recently studying statistics, which includes a high level of mathematics, has help me gain a deeper understanding of the A level topics, especially helpful for students who wish to attain the highest grades.

Now that I have completed my MSc in Statistics I am able to provide statistics tuition to university students.
