Information about Kay

I`m a qualified maths teacher with a background in learning support and a strong grounding in the sciences. I have a particular interest in combating maths anxiety and building mathematical confidence.

I build confidence and resilience. Maths and science are often seen as different from other subjects, but experience tells me that they are just a set of knowledge and skills that – like any other – needs to be acquired through practice. For almost everyone, success is a matter of hard work and persistence, not innate brilliance. I have found that large and long established stumbling blocks to learning can be removed in a surprisingly short time once some of the pervasive myths surrounding these subjects are dispelled.

My approach to tutoring combines genuine understanding with a strong strategic component. I encourage students to interpret questions carefully and pay close attention to mark schemes. In order to demonstrate your learning when it really matters and get the grade you want, you need to know what the examiners are looking for: subject knowledge alone isn`t enough.

Availability: I`m available on weekdays and at weekends.

As I`m reliant on public transport, I can only take on students living in Chesterfield if you want face-to-face tuition. However, I also teach online.

Willing to travel: 3 miles

Experience: While a PhD student I worked with physics and interdisciplinary science undergraduates in lab sessions and seminars.

I then worked as a learning support assistant in A-level, BTEC and Access to Higher Education science classes at a further education college. My experiences in learning support have given me a good understanding of the obstacles many students face and the strategies that can be used to overcome them.

During my teacher training placement at the same college, I taught GCSE maths at Foundation and Higher levels and provided learning support in Functional Skills maths classes.

Since completing teacher training, I have tutored students in GCSE and A level Maths and in the Maths used in Nursing.

Kay was a great help when I was preparing to re-sit the Professional Skills test in Numeracy to begin PGCE teacher training. It was an enormous relief to pass, and meant that I was able to secure my place on the course.
Thank you very much indeed Kay!

Tutors Response :

It`s a horribly demanding exam. I`m so glad I was able to help.

Kay is very reliable , punctual and professional. She has been supporting my niece for about a month and already there has been a significant improvement in her confidence and marks in exams at school .
Kay is supporting with maths and science and I would definitely recommend her as a tutor .
