Information about Dora

I graduated with a First Class degree in English and Theatre Studies from Warwick in July 2017. I am now training as a journalist with News Associates London.

I achieved A*s in English Literature and English Language at both GCSE and A-levels, as well as a further A in Geography at A-Level. My specialist areas of study are English literature from the 17th and 18th centuries (including Shakespeare), but I have a wide grounding in other areas, specialising in 20th century American literature. As a journalist, attention to writing style and clarity is a priority for both myself and my tutees.

When teaching English Literature, learning methods for close reading is essential, not least because that is how the subject is generally examined. This is important for poetry and prose it is also a useful skill when studying plays. There are universal techniques which I have learnt and pass on to my students, through means of reading aloud and viewing adaptations where appropriate. Incorporating an understand of historical context is a large part of my work, through film clips, timelines and other exercises. Tutoring English isn`t just about books!

When teaching Drama and Theatre, I take a performative approach: understanding the play as a play text (how it is written) and as a performance text (how it translates on stage). An understanding of stagecraft is central to understanding the subject, and taking exams or writing essays. I encourage students to reach further and consider unorthodox productions when studying a play, as well as adaptations and reviews.

English and Drama are dynamic subjects, where students sometimes find the absence of a concrete curriculum daunting. I consider this an advantage, where every individual can access a text through their own academic strengths.

More broadly, I teach students how to structure essays with a clear, coherent argument - a skill applicable to any academic subject which is more of a knack that one can learn.

I also offer
- coaching and drafting of personal statements for university/school applications
- proof reading for dissertations, theses, coursework etc.
- a more broad critical thinking teaching approach where my students learn the art of comprehension and how to construct essays for a variety of arts and humanities subjects (note, I do not teach Philosophy, just pure Critical Thinking).

I am available to teach Skype lessons should that suit your schedule best.

Experience: I have tutored privately for over three years, focusing on English Literature at all levels from primary to A-Level, as well as teaching adult learners who are studying English part-time masters I specialise not just in English Literature but Critical Thinking, a vital skill for examinations, interviews and any kind of academic writing. I have taught Shakespeare extensively for both GCSE and A-level students and also tutor students applying for entrance exams for both schools and university.
