Information about Karen

I am 27 years old and I have recently completed my PhD in Neuroscience at the University of York, where I have been working as a post-doctoral researcher for the past year. I have a degree in Pharmacology from the University of Newcastle and A-Levels in Psychology, Biology and Food and Nutrition. My degree contained a lot of Biology and Chemistry, so I am more than qualified to teach GCSE and A-level Science. I am dedicated, hard working, goal-orientated and enjoy working with others. I am very familiar with ongoing coursework and working towards deadlines for exams so I believe I am very focused and efficient in achieving these goals.

I start off the lessons with a free introductory session to get to know the students. This helps me to establish exactly what it is the student requires from me and what it is they want to get out of the sessions. It also allows the students to see my teaching style and decide for themselves if they think my approach would help them. I love science and I love teaching it, my main aim is to make science enjoyable for others and seeing students engage and progress throughout the sessions is what drives me to tutor.

I am very patient and personable and I understand everybody has a different way of learning, so I would be comfortable tailoring my program to the individuals needs.

I`m not a miracle worker, if your child is predicted a C, I can`t proclaim to get them an A*. However, I can make 100% sure they achieve that C grade and with constant help, improve them towards a B grade, maybe more. I like to challenge people, to concentrate on areas in which people are unsure-there is no point learning something you already know!

I place particular emphasis on exam techniques and how to approach exams. It is not always what you know that will get you good grades in an exam, it is also identifying exactly what the questions are asking you and how to gain maximum marks.

Availability: I am available all evenings and most weekends

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring for over 3 years in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. I have lots of experience tutoring students working towards exams and I am familiar with the major exam boards (AQA, EDEXCEL and OCR).

During my undergraduate degree I worked as an Aimhigher Associate which involved visiting schools local to the Newcastle area and delivering sessions on higher education, making it more accessible to pupils. This gave me vast experience of working with and dealing with secondary school students.
I have also worked as a demonstrator the the University of York which involved assisting the undergraduates in their laboratory practicals and workshops, teaching them the techniques they need and helping them to write reports.

Dr Karen has been tutoring my son for a short while and he has found her very helpful and informative. She is likeable, reliable and easy to get on with. We will be continuing to use her until the end of the exam period.

This young lady is amazing. My daughter is able to work with Karen easily. Karen has such a lovely nature it would be suprising for anyone to feel insecure with her style and method, my daughter relates very well with her. During the last month my daughters confidence has grown with her maths and has gone up 2 grade levels.
Karen may not think she is a miracle worker but I do.
