Information about Zoe

I am an experienced tutor with a degree in English from the University of Oxford, and a Masters in Classical and Contemporary Text from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I specialise in tutoring English language and literature, though I also have a wide knowledge of a variety of subjects including Theatre Studies, and experience teaching both Maths and Science for younger pupils. I have excellent academic credentials, and also have varied interests particularly in the arts, as I have acted in many productions, play the violin, and dabble in aerial circus acrobatics!

My teaching method is a mix of fun and engaging exercises - talking to my students about their work, offering new perspectives and encouraging them to develop their own ideas - alongside the less exciting but equally necessary practice of going over papers, doing comprehension and writing exercises. I believe in mixing hard work with enthusiasm and fun, and trying to find a way to help a student not only improve but enjoy a subject more. I always approach each of my students with a fresh perspective, and a willingness to engage and adapt to the method of learning which suits them best. I believe this is the best and only way to tutor, and the way to gain something out of on-one-on learning that you don`t get in the average classroom.

Availability: Weekdays, evenings and weekends.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have been tutoring for over five years - in Scotland for the last three years, and before that through reputable private tutoring agencies in London, such as Bonas Macfarlane, Bright Young Things and Kings Tutors.

Through that time I have formed many successful relationships with my students, helping them get into private schools, improve grades and apply to universities. I have had students successfully apply to Oxford, and one GCSE student improved her grade from a C to an A during our tuition. I have also seen several pupils through the admissions process to top schools including City of London, Westminster, and Latymer. In Scotland, I have helped students through entrance exams into many schools including The Glasgow Academy, Hutchesons` and Craigholme. Alongside this, I`ve tutored English across Nationals and Higher levels, improving close reading and essay skills for students resulting in higher grades.

Prior to this, I travelled to Hong Kong and taught English as a foreign language there. Over the course of five weeks I taught a wide variety of ages and abilities, from 8 year old children in a primary school to 20 year old students who were about to leave college and apply to universities.

I tutor on a student-by-student approach. I feel that teaching in schools is so often mass produced and does not offer everyone the opportunities that they deserve. Everyone has a different way of learning and I think that the best way to teach someone is to work with them and find out what that method is, that may not fully be addressed in the school environment. I also believe that talking and debate is often the best way to widen a student`s knowledge and make them think more about the subject, improving their ability to formulate coherent arguments about a topic. In my tutorials I often go through written work and past papers with pupils, discussing both the major and more detailed themes of their subject, whilst also setting different activities to both enthuse and instigate thinking about issues in a variety of ways.

Some success stories and testimonials:
- 11+ tuition in English, Maths and Reasoning with a pupil who was successful at every school to which they applied
- GCSE English Literature, improved a student`s grade from a B to an A*
- A Level English Literature, helped to raise the grade of a pupil with cerebral palsy from a C- to an A
- Successfully tutored pupils through Oxbridge applications
- 5-7+, helped a student with basic skills through educational play, up to an acceptance into schools through the 7+ exam

"Miss Zoe is an excellent tutor. I`ve learnt so much since we started lessons. From prompting me as we analyse different types of literature to thoroughly improving my writing skills, Zoe has been a real help." - Nabihah Rahman

"I think she is a wonderful and brilliant tutor who explains information very clearly and is always there to guide me when I am stuck. She is always determined to get the best out of me and sees how capable I am of writing well and answering questions when I doubt myself. Her challenging questions allow me to think outside the box and open my views on different perspectives... Zoe is always on time and very organised and is always finding out extra resources for me during her spare time which are relatable to my work. I would definitely recommend her to other students since we get a lot done in the hours we have, and I am left with a much clearer understanding of what I am learning." - Tashnia

I contacted Zoe for lessons for my 9 year old boy. Communication was good until I paid to Tutorhunt and got her contact details. Communication was very slow afterwards not responding phone or text messages (apparently her phone broke) and very slow in emails.
At the end we had to get another Tutor which was excellent. I regret to say we were very disappointed with Zoe as her profile was very good.
We were also disappointed that we had to pay twice the Tutorhunt fee to get only 1 tutor.
I am not sure if Tutorhunt is a good system.

Tutors Response :

Dear David,

I`m so sorry to hear about this as it seems to have been a breakdown in communication. As I said, I`d been having problems with my phone after switching to a new provider, which was why I didn`t receive your initial calls.

However as far as I`m aware, the last communication we had was that I sent you an email in response to your query about dates on January 11th at 12.10pm. I take it you did not receive this?

I`m very glad you`ve been able to find a good tutor since then, and sorry again to hear about your experience. I`ve been using TutorHunt for several years and the system has worked very well for myself and my clients up until now.

All best,
Zoe

Zoe was a great help in getting me prepared for my GCSE exam. She managed to tutor me through Skype and we were able to share documents online. A great way to tutor. Thank you so much.
