Yoanna

My name is Yoanna and I am a cellist. Having graduated from the Guildhall School as well as the Royal Academy of Music, I currently perform as a soloist and chamber musician in the UK and abroad. I also have a string quartet called the Barbican Quartet (www.barbicanquartet).
I found the cello when I was 11 years old and it has been the most important thing in my life ever since. I love sharing my passion for this instrument, and I love teaching. I have over ten years of experience in various places including Atélier St-Michel in Montréal and the Conservatoire de Montréal where I was a teaching assistent, at the Chobham Academy in London as well as privately. I have also given masterclasses at the Siete Lagos festival in Argentina. My students have included young cellists working toward exams, total beginners of all ages, as well as advanced players. My philosophy is that everyone can learn to play the cello, it only depends on one’s dedication! I focus on the physical aspects of playing in order to facilitate music making, and aim to find each person’s individual physical approach to the instrument, as well as really sharpening up the hearing in order to combine imagination and technique.
