Information about Rory

I`m a professional and experienced tutor of guitar, drums, mandolin and ukulele. I currently teach at Your Guitar Academy and New London Performing Arts Centre as well as privately.

I have more than eight years teaching experience and over a decade’s experience playing music in professional performances in different cities around the world, including Seoul, Berlin and London.

I have a great love of all kinds of music, and I am experienced in playing many styles, from pop, rock and blues to classical, latin, soul, jazz, folk, metal and Balkan.

Availability: Any time is considered; mornings, afternoons and evenings on weekdays or weekends.

Willing to travel: 12 miles

Experience: I have taught students of different ages and skill levels around the world, including South Korea, Berlin and London.

I began my career teaching English as a foreign language, and my wide experience in this field informs the approach I take to teaching an instrument. I was a full-time teacher in South Korea for three years and I taught English as well as the drums and guitar as a freelance tutor in Berlin for a year.

I conduct lessons to the highest standards. My 120-hour CELTA course and Berlitz teacher training, as well as my recent experience in a British Council accredited school in London mean I am familiar with many methods of successful teaching, assessment and feedback.

Tutoring Approach:

Lessons are available in guitar, drums, mandolin, ukulele and bass guitar.

In our first lesson, you’ll get an idea of what to expect from my course. I’ll learn a bit about you, what level you’re at and what you want to get out of the lessons. And most importantly, we’ll get you playing the instrument straight away.

In my opinion, the most important part of learning an instrument is to enjoy playing and be creative. I will tailor my lessons to your individual needs and tastes, and keep the right level of challenge in order to keep you steadily progressing.

Students of all ages, levels and abilities are welcome, including absolute beginners. If you’re not a beginner but you want to brush up on your playing, we’ll see where you’re at from the trial lesson. Feel free to get in touch if you have particular needs or interests.

To see the best progress, I recommend you take at least one lesson a week.

Normally, lessons are conducted in my home studio in N18 (Lower Edmonton, just off the north circular). However, I am more than happy to come to you. If you do want lessons at your location, remember that you will need your own equipment (drum kit, guitar etc). Also, transportation costs including travel time and ticket fare must be taken into account.

Thanks and I look forward to meeting you soon!

Student Feedback:

From Charlotte (5/5): Rory is a fantastic teacher, taking the time to tailor each lesson beforehand and then further alter his plans or break-down difficult sections if I find things hard to pick up. I already feel like I`ve learnt more with Rory in the first few lessons than I did in years of messing around with the guitar by myself!

Very much recommended.

From Connor (5/5): Rory is a wonderful teacher with a real talent for engaging with his students. He`s got an incredible breadth of knowledge in multiple styles and instruments, and puts a lot of work into each lesson. He`s also just a great guy to chat with too! Would definitely recommend.

From Kirsty (5/5): Rory takes the time to prepare my lessons well and tailors them to meet my needs and style. He is patient and I find his lessons enjoyable and easy to follow. Rory also prepares lesson notes and materials so that I can practice. He is flexible in his lesson times and is very reliable. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons and feel that I have made great progress. I highly recommend Rory!

From Rachael (5/5): Rory is a great, professional guitar tutor, his teaching style allows you to go at your own pace but he is knowledgable in when to increase the difficulty and bring in new skills. I would highly recommend him whatever stage you’re at in your learning process.

From Daniel (5/5): I`d strongly recommend Rory to anyone looking to improve their guitar skills. The lessons are always varied and we work on all different aspects of guitar playing. He`s also more than happy to work on any specific songs you want, and will have them ready to go on your next lesson. I`ve improved more in the last 6 months with Rory than my previous few years trying to improve on my own. Highly recommended.

From Gary (5/5): Well organised and an experienced tutor. Knows how to structure lessons to keep challenging student whilst keeping lesson enjoyable. Method of teaching is trusted and listens to student feedback and adapts when required. Very good tutor.

From Dave (5/5): A great first few lessons, for someone who is a complete beginner on guitar. Highly recommended.

Rory is a very polite mild mannered tutor, he is patient, kind and respectful. He has really inspired my son to learn electric guitar and continues to do so. It is a pleasure to know him
