Information about Katherine

English language teaching

I am a trilingual QTS primary school teacher, with four years of experience in the Primary classroom at Good/Outstanding British and International Schools in London and Milan.

As a British teacher, fluent in French and Italian with a 120hr Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate, I feel confident delivering language lessons to both adult learners and children alike.

I bring to my English tutoring lessons, ample knowledge of teaching English as a Modern Foreign Language (MFL). My background spans a full range of responsibilities inherent in teaching the British National/Cambridge curriculum (spanning from EYFS to Y6) and the IB Curriculum (for topic-based subjects) as well as teaching English and French as part of immersive language curriculums at International schools. With a record of raising excellent standards in education within the schools I have worked, I use my experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to promote and deliver outstanding private tuition.

Tutoring for children

When tutoring younger learners, I emphasize the importance of the social, emotional and cultural aspects of a child’s learning. I teach individuals to become independent, resilient, active seekers of knowledge, who aim high and excel academically. I endeavour to tutor in a way that supports children in becoming comfortable in the four key skills of speaking, learning, listening and writing. This encourages them to express themselves, understand others and independently question the world around them.

I aim to teach fun and challenging lessons, that take into account each child’s needs and ability. Therefore, whether it’s teaching them how to use apostrophes or learning about the different types of nouns, I always make my lessons fun and interactive through the of use role-play, games, music and art. Some examples of online lessons include Listen-then-Paint activities, playing games like Quiz-Quiz-Trade or acting out scenarios from famous stories like Jack and the Beanstalk. Through these experiences I want children to cultivate an understanding of the English language as a tool that is theirs and that they can shape through the skills acquired during their tutoring lessons.

Mentoring teens

Transition into adulthood can be a testing time for many adolescents. Examinations, university applications and leaving home, amongst other external pressures, can lead to a period of low self-esteem and higher levels of anxiety. As a dedicated mentor to adolescents, I aim to help individuals enjoy a capacity for a far more compassionate, accepting relationship with themselves.

Through working with me, teenagers will develop a deeper level of resilience, as well as increased social and emotional intelligence. I teach them skills that will help strengthen their development, such as helping with problem-solving, confidence building, or even knowing how to respond to tough questions during an interview. I am currently undertaking a certified course in Counselling Children and Adolescents Level 4, which has furthered my skills and tools in coaching and caring for young people.

So far, I have mentored young people around university applications, examination preparation as well as relationship difficulties, peer pressure or social malaise. Most importantly, I spend time listening to teenagers, passing along guidance and reassurance that will urge them to see that life is full of possibilities that can lead them towards a very successful path.
