Information about Mark

I am an experienced [nearly 25 years] teacher, semi retired working as a private tutor

Availability: To be decided with student but generally fluid to suit. currently available.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: I entered the teaching profession on the back of my interest and voluntary experience in helping young people with severe emotional and psychological issues/needs. For four years I was head of RS at a ‘secondary modern’ having a large SEN make up. During that time the school had a 5 GCSE A*-C grade pass rate of 8 - 21% [one of the lowest in the country]. My graduate teaching qualification [PGCE] included a teaching placement in the East End of London.

Out of a developing interest in meeting the challenges of a high academic environment, I have over the latter half of my teaching career worked, on occasions as Head of RS/PSHE, at several schools holding a respectable 95-100% “5 A*-C” pass rate. Consequently, I have substantial experience of working with pupils having very challenging behavioural and academic needs through to those at the ‘Oxbridge’ end of the academic spectrum. I have much experience of preparing pupils for ISEB Common Entrance/Scholarship examinations and entrance/scholarship examinations for such schools as Eton, Charterhouse, Winchester, RGS, and other respected senior schools in the South-East of England.

In addition to RS/RE over key stages 2 - 5, subjects taught include: Geography and English at KS2, Classical Studies, English, History, Geography, EFL and ICT at KS3 PSHE, Citizenship and PE/Games at KS3/KS4 and Sociology at A Level.

I have experience of many inspections (Nine) including Ofsted, Independent Schools Inspectorate and Church of England with the latest being January 2016 at St Andrew’s Prep School.

I have a wealth of professional and voluntary work experience acquired in the UK and abroad in the social/care work environment, ranging from geriatric care to work with young people having severe physical and psychological needs, social and substance dependency problems, hospice support, and several centres for support for the disabled and the homeless. I have counselling training as part of my INSET and also as a past member of the UK Victim Support Scheme. I am particularly interested in the pastoral side of school life.

I have lectured abroad in Philosophy and Theology at undergraduate level. I did embark upon a PhD programme at Durham University on the back of my MA Degree Dissertation but had to withdraw from that for family reasons. I have several years’ experience as an assistant examiner with OCR for A level R. S. Philosophy of Religion.

Sport

I have a full history of participation in sport, including junior county cricket honours, national cricket trials, 2nd XI cricket for Leicestershire C. C. C. and semi-professional soccer. I remain an active sportsman.
