Information about Julie
I have been teaching and tutoring for more than 20 years and am as enthusiastic now as the day I started - just more skilled and experienced!
I have an English degree (BA Hons) and am a fully qualified English teacher (with QTS). I can help with catch-up, provide ongoing support with school work, contribute to home-schooling, or extend your childs learning. I am able to deliver a set block of lessons, or provide longer-term tuition.
Availability: Weekdays. Online only.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I trained (PGCE) as a secondary teacher and taught at KS3, KS4 and A-level for six years in mainstream London schools; for 4 of those years I was head of KS3 English and also taught Key Skills.
After moving abroad, I switched to one-to-one tutoring and have enjoyed doing that for over 10 years.
I would say that I am a flexible and adaptable teacher. I put the student and their needs at the heart of what I do, and build good relationships with them. With patient encouragement, enthusiasm, rigour and humour I enable all my students, whatever their level, to make good progress and become more confident.
Working with students one-to-one, I tutor KS3-5 students following the English national curriculum. However, I have greatly expanded my subject knowledge and skills so that I can teach (and have taught) Primary literacy, KS1 and KS2 English, and English as an additional language. I have prepared private candidates for international exams, including iGCSE English Language and Cambridge Advanced Certificate, all of whom have achieved or exceeded their goals.
I have worked with a wider range of students, too: from age 7 to adult learners. I have taught children with special educational needs including ASD, dyslexia and elective mutism. I have also worked on delivering gifted and talented programmes for KS3 and KS4.
I enjoy creating new teaching approaches, activities and learning resources: over the years I have been commissioned by AQA, Edexcel and Teachit English to write teaching materials for them and these have been published online and in print. My published work (as sole author or co-author) includes:
Romeo and Juliet - Active Teaching Approaches
`Take Cover - KS3 English Cover Lessons Pack`
`Take Cover - KS4 English Cover Lessons Pack`
`Take 5 - A medley of tips, approaches, web links, interactive activities and resources for teaching English at Key Stages 3, 4 & 5`
`The Tempest - a six week teaching pack`
`KS3 Reading Comprehension`
`KS3/4 Mastering Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar`
AQA Poetry Moon On the Tides Teaching Pack` for GCSE
To sum up, I have a very wide experience of different abilities, age groups, syllabuses and exam boards, and can tailor a lesson or series of lessons to you or your child`s specific needs and goals.
I also love solving fiendishly tricky cryptic crossword puzzles! So if you have always wanted to have a go at this but weren`t sure where to start, I can do a guided session (or sessions) for you.
Note: I have a clear `criminal background certificate` (Greek Department of Criminal Records and Pardons). An official English translation (British Council Document Verification and Translation Service) can be shown if required.
