Information about Asami

Brought up and educated to a university level in Japan, I’m qualified to teach both Japanese and English as foreign languages. Started teaching Japanese at the Japan Foundation in Egypt as a trainee teacher in 2011. I also taught English to adult learners at the British Council Egypt in 2012, before I moved to London in 2013 to obtain a Masters degree in Theory and Practice of Translation at SOAS, University of London.

On completion of the degree, I was endorsed as one of 3 graduate entrepreneurs by SOAS and founded a limited education company to promote Japanese language and culture in the UK. I’ve taught at companies (including Ernst & Young and Credit Suisse), 4 secondary schools, a university (Imperial College London) and 70+ private learners across London. I also taught courses on grammar and conversation of from beginner to advanced levels at International House London from January 2020 to October 2021.

I am interested to learn about foreign cultures and have been always passionate about both teaching and learning languages. Before moving to London, I lived in Cairo between 2010 and 2013 to explore the language and culture of the country. My command of languages are:

- Japanese - Native proficiency
- English - Proficient (CEFR C2) - Cambridge CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) December 2012
- Arabic (Egyptian) - Intermediate level (CEFR B1) - Studied at IHI, Cairo between 2010 and 2011, lived in Egypt for 2 and half years
- Arabic (Modern Standard) - Beginner level (CEFR A2)
- Russian (CEFR A2) - Have been studying part-time since March 2020

In addition to language lessons, I have been organising events (since 2017 and switched to online in 2020) to introduce Japanese culture and build Japanese learners` community in the UK. The aims of the events are for learners to obtain opportunities to learn and practice the language by interacting with other learners/Japanese people through mini lessons and workshops.

Ms Asami is a really good tutor. She tutored my husband and I in beginners Japanese. She was very well prepared, had very good material and was very patient. Being a native, she had great insights into behaviour and Japanese culture.

Superb tutor. I noticed she charges a bit more than some other tutors on this site, but she is absolutely worth the premium.
Asami-san is excellent at figuring out what level I was at and adapting to meet me there.
Although I`m fairly new, we mostly talk entirely in Japanese. She is very good at figuring out what I am trying to say and sympathetic when talking herself.
Although I am shy when talking Japanese, she is very friendly and good at putting me at ease so I am confident to try.
Often I am very tired by the end of the day and an hour of Japanese is honestly the last thing I feel like doing, but Asami-san always makes it a pleasure and within five minutes of starting I am full of enthusiasm.

Asami is an exceptionally dedicated tutor. She provides tons os extra material beyond the textbook, and is very flexible in adapting the course to individual learning needs.
She also creates a community for students and other people who appreciate the Japanese language and culture.

Asami is a very good teacher and always appreciative of new questions during our lessons. She is good at connecting the course material with Japanese cultures and history. I really like how prepared Asami is for each lesson and how she has tailored handouts on the material to help me to learn Japanese. I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with Asami.

Asami proved very adept at quickly understanding my pace of learning. She also adapted her teaching style to suit my needs. Although Japanese is a fairly tough language to begin with (for Westerners), Asami`s lessons are always fun whilst retaining an appropriate structure. I would highly recommed Asami to anyone wishing to learn Japanese.

Asami is fantastic, she produces her own sheets and recommends a great textbook, she even walked me to the bookshop to get the book!

I appreciate her dedication aswell, even after a family bereavement she still taught me a lesson on the day.
